Save money on DIY by knowing when to call in the experts

Rolling up your sleeves and being handy can be very satisfying, but there are some things in life that are best left to the professionals. Taking the DIY route on the wrong kind of project can be financially risky at best, and dangerous to your health at worst.

Here are nine home repairs and upgrades that could be costly when attempted by the average homeowner.

1. Electrical work

Working with electricity can be dangerous if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. Even seemingly small mistakes can lead to serious injuries or death. Electricity can also be unpredictable; it’s possible to get a shock even when you think you’re doing everything right.

At the very least, it can be very expensive to fix if you get it wrong. So, if you don’t have training in electrical work, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

Emergency Electricians have the necessary skills to do the jobs safely and effectively, can operate at any time, day or night and they can help you with everything from installing new light fixtures to wiring your home for security.

2. Roofing

The roof is one of the most important parts of your home, and repairing or replacing it can be a daunting task. Unless you have experience in roofing, spend the extra money for someone who knows what they’re doing.

It’s highly likely that a professional roofer will have come across your problem before and know exactly how to fix it. They’ll also have all the required tools that can be very expensive to buy.

Attempting to fix a roof yourself could lead to a stay in the hospital or an unexpected hole in the roof that now also needs to be fixed.

A professional will also be able to recommend the right materials for your home.

3. Plumbing

Plumbing is another area where it’s best to leave the work to the pros. Plumbing repairs and installation can be tricky, and if done incorrectly, can cause extensive damage to your home – not to mention some very unpleasant smells.

So if you’re not confident in your plumbing skills, it’s best to leave the work to a professional. You’ll save yourself time, money and aggravation, and you can rest assured that the job will be done correctly.

4. Painting

Painting may seem like a simple task, but it can be tricky to get perfect results if you’re not experienced. A professional painter will have the tools and skills necessary to get the job done quickly and efficiently. They can also help you choose the right undercoat, paint type and colours for your home.

Painting can also be a time-consuming and messy process. Paint marks on carpets and furniture from an inexperienced painter will be an added expense to remove.

6. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is a complex system that requires special knowledge and training to properly install and maintain. Unless you have experience in this area, it’s best to leave it to the experts. HVAC technicians can help with everything from repairs to installation and maintenance.

HVAC systems are typically large and complicated. Attempting to fix them yourself can lead to injury or further damage to the equipment.

In addition, proper installation and maintenance are critical to the safe and efficient operation of the system. Improper installation or maintenance can lead to increased energy costs, system failure, and even fires.

7. Foundation repair

Foundation repair is a complex process that should be done by a professional.

If you try to fix your home’s foundation on your own, you may not be able to identify all the problems that need to be addressed, and you may end up making the situation worse. Additionally, if you do not have the necessary tools and equipment, you may be left with an incomplete job.

8. Window replacement

An incorrectly placed window can lead to leaks and other damage to your home. Working with glass can also be extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. A professional window installer will be able to replace your windows quickly and efficiently, and they can help you choose the right windows for your home.

9. Tree removal

Removing a tree is a big task, requiring specialist equipment and strict safety procedures that need to be followed.

Attempting to remove a tree yourself could lead to injury or extensive damage to your, or your neighbours, property.

If you do decide you’re ready to take on an ambitious DIY project, keep the following tips in mind.

YouTube is your friend. There are thousands of helpful and free videos on how to complete just about any DIY project.

Make a plan. Know what you are doing before you start. This will help avoid any potential problems.

Use the correct tools for the job. Having the proper tools will make the project go more smoothly and be less frustrating.

Start with easy projects. Don’t try to take on a complicated project on your first time around. Start with something simple and work your way up, or break down a big project into lots of small steps.

Take your time. Rushing through a project can lead to mistakes and frustration.

Safety first. Make sure to use goggles, gloves, and other safety gear when necessary.

Finally (and perhaps most importantly), don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are stuck or don’t know how to do something, don’t hesitate to call in a professional.

DIY projects can be a lot of fun and save you heaps of money, but only if they are done correctly. Be honest with yourself when it comes to your skill level, experience and limitations to avoid an expensive mistake.
