Does thread count matter for all fabrics?
Not all sheets are created equal, and not all fabrics play by the same rules. While thread count is a useful measure for cotton sheets, it’s less relevant for other materials.
Linen, for example, naturally has a lower thread count because its fibres are thicker and coarser. Bamboo sheets, which are made from fibres processed to mimic cotton, also don’t rely on thread count in the same way.
So, if you’re eyeing off a set of linen sheets with a thread count of 100, don’t be alarmed—that’s perfectly normal for this type of fabric.
What’s the sweet spot for thread count?
If you’re shopping for cotton sheets, experts suggest that a thread count of 200 is a great starting point.
If you want something a little more luxurious, look for sheets in the 400–600 range. Anything above 800? You’re probably just paying for marketing hype, not extra comfort.
For linen, the Sleep Foundation recommends a thread count between 80 and 140, but you’ll rarely see this listed because it’s not a meaningful measure for linen.
For bamboo, a thread count between 250 and 500 is ideal, with most experts agreeing that 300–500 is the sweet spot.
What should you really look for in bed sheets?
If thread count isn’t the be-all and end-all, what should you focus on? The answer is simple: the quality of the fibre.
Natural fibres like cotton and linen are generally the best choice, with long-staple cottons (such as Egyptian cotton) being especially prized for their strength and softness.
Campbell recommends steering clear of bamboo sheets, which are often processed into viscose rayon.
While they can feel soft initially, they tend to be less durable and don’t hold up as well to repeated washing.
Cotton, on the other hand, actually becomes stronger when wet, making it a more robust choice for everyday use.

Budget-friendly bedding: What’s the best value?
If you’re looking for sheets that are both comfortable and affordable, Campbell suggests 100% cotton sheets with a 200-thread-count percale weave.
Percale is known for its crisp, cool feel and durability, making it a great option for Aussie summers and for anyone who likes their sheets to feel fresh and breathable.
Other factors to consider
- Weave: Percale (crisp and cool) vs sateen (smooth and silky). Choose based on your personal preference.
- Finish: Some sheets are treated with chemicals to make them wrinkle-resistant. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to avoid these.
- Fit: Make sure the sheets are deep enough to fit your mattress, especially if you have a pillow-top or use a mattress topper.

Don’t be dazzled by sky-high thread counts and marketing jargon. Focus on natural fibres, reputable brands, and a thread count that falls within the recommended range for your chosen material. Your wallet—and your sleep—will thank you.

I bought a set of white 1000 Thread Count sheets only to find they were hotel grade in terms of durability only. After washing they were still that stiff I thought they might crack when I folded them. If it doesn’t say XXXX Threads/Inch or XXXX Threads/Cm assume it’s a con.
XXXX Thread Count may have been assumed to mean something once upon a time when merchants were relatively honest and a handshake meant something; not any more. Buyer beware!
