Top Australian spring holidays

Wondering where to holiday in your state or territory this spring? Why not try one of these eight destinations that showcase the best of Australia.

Melbourne, Vic
Home of the Spring Racing Carnival, which culminates in the race that stops a nation, Melbourne is a hive of activity between September and November, including Spring Fashion Week and the AFL Grand Final. As the winter chill begins to thaw, locals flock to the blossoming Botanical Gardens, pubs, markets, and festivals. Find out what’s on this season.

Kangaroo Island, SA
Easily accessible from Adelaide, Kangaroo Island offers a real taste of Aussie wildlife, making it perfect for overseas tourists and locals alike. Meet sea lions, koalas, echidnas, birds, penguins, wallabies and, of course, kangaroos. The craggy coastal scenery is breathtaking – explore underground caves, national parks and beautiful bays.

Hunter Valley, NSW
Australia’s oldest wine region is a must for gourmet travellers, with a wide range of cellar doors and restaurants to visit. The Spring Festival of Flowers features more than 100,000 annuals in September, or in November, explore the art trail at the Sculpture of the Vineyards.

Daintree Rainforest, Qld
Far North Queensland’s 1200-square-kilometre paradise is World Heritage-listed for a reason – it’s one of the most beautiful and diverse eco-systems on the planet, full of untouched wilderness and tropical holiday experiences. This is really an unforgettable Australian destination.

Canberra, ACT
Head to the nation’s capital in spring to see the Floriade program in full bloom, and enjoy an array of events, stalls and exhibits. Canberra has some of the country’s best art galleries, museums and historical attractions, and spring is a lovely time of year to take them all in.

Margaret River, WA
Whether you’re visiting for the waves, caves, forests or wineries, Margaret River is a gorgeous spring getaway offering a taste of land and sea. Just a few hours south of Perth, you’ll get lost among the soaring trees and lush-green landscapes. Foodies will enjoy the wine region’s world-class fare.

Katherine, NT
A major centre for art, culture, heritage, nature and wildlife, Katherine should be on every Aussie’s bucket list. Swim in rock pools, water falls and thermal springs; take a 4WD tour; go fishing, camping or trekking … for fans of the outdoors, the possibilities are endless.

Cradle Mountain, Tas
Tasmania’s cool climate means spring will still be chilly, so be sure to rug-up when you explore this rugged beauty. Wander through the old-growth forest, past icy streams and alpine peaks, and you’ll have to remind yourself you’re still in Australia. Don’t forget your camera!
