Many Australians frequent well-known retail outlets for various household and personal goods. However, a recent announcement concerning a specific electrical product sold at a popular store chain warrants immediate attention from consumers who may have purchased it.
This advisory relates to a potential safety concern that requires prompt action.
For many Australians, Kmart is a go-to destination for affordable homewares, gadgets, and those little creature comforts that make life just that bit easier.
But if you’ve recently picked up a heated elbow wrap from their popular Anko range, it’s time to check your cupboards—and fast.
Kmart’s Heated Elbow Wrap recalled after burn injuries
Kmart has issued an urgent recall for its Anko Heated Elbow Wrap, following reports that the product can overheat and cause burns to the skin.
The recall applies to all units sold between 1 January 2025 and 4 April 2025. The product, which promised ‘soothing warmth to relieve tired or strained elbows’, has now been pulled from shelves and removed from Kmart’s website.
The wrap, designed to be worn during daily activities or after exercise, is powered by a USB cord and was marketed as a convenient way to ease aches and pains.
However, Kmart has confirmed that if the wrap is positioned incorrectly or wrapped too tightly, it can overheat—posing a significant risk, especially for those with heat-sensitive skin. Unfortunately, injuries have already been reported.
What should you do if you own this product?
If you have purchased the Anko Heated Elbow Wrap, Kmart is urging you to stop using it immediately.
You can return the product to any Kmart store for a full refund, even if you no longer have the receipt.
If you’re unable to return the product in person, or if you’ve sold or gifted it to someone else, Kmart asks that you contact their customer service team on 1800 124 125 for further instructions.
What about other heated wraps?
It’s worth noting that while the elbow wrap has been recalled, similar Anko products for wrists and ankles have not been affected. However, this incident is a timely reminder always to use heated products with care and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely.
Why do heated wraps pose a risk?
Heated wraps and pads are popular for managing joint pain, arthritis, and muscle soreness, especially among older Australians. But they’re not without risks.
If a heated product is too hot, left on for too long, or used on sensitive skin, it can cause burns or even more serious injuries.
This risk is higher for people with reduced sensation in their skin, such as those with diabetes or certain neurological conditions.

Tips for safe use of heated products
If you use any kind of heated pad or wrap, keep these safety tips in mind:
- Always read the instructions before use.
- Never wrap too tightly—allow for airflow and movement.
- Check the temperature before applying to your skin.
- Limit use to the recommended time (usually 15-20 minutes).
- Don’t use while sleeping or if you’re unable to check your skin regularly.
- Inspect for damage before each use—frayed cords or exposed wires are a red flag.
- Consult your doctor if you have medical conditions that affect skin sensitivity.
Product recalls: What are your rights?
Under Australian Consumer Law, you’re entitled to a refund or replacement for recalled products, even if you don’t have a receipt.
Retailers like Kmart are required to make the process as easy as possible for customers. If you ever have trouble returning a recalled item, contact the ACCC or your state’s consumer protection agency for help.
