For many Australians, the humble caravan is more than just a holiday escape—it’s a home away from home, a ticket to freedom, and a blank canvas for creativity.
Whether you’re a seasoned grey nomad or just starting your caravanning adventures, making your space feel comfortable and personal is key to enjoying life on the road.
But let’s be honest: caravan makeovers can get expensive, and not everyone wants to splash out on costly renovations. That’s why we always look for clever, affordable ways to give your van a fresh look.

Enter the latest Kmart hack that’s got the caravanning community buzzing: self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles for just $13 a pack.
Caravan owner Zoë recently shared her transformation story online, and it’s nothing short of inspiring.
Armed with a few packs of Kmart’s stick-on vinyl floor planks and a little help from a handy carpenter friend, Zoë completely revamped her caravan’s interior—all without breaking the bank.
‘I was lucky enough to have a carpenter with me, and he gave me a hand installing the flooring. But as long as the floor is clean, it’s very easy to apply the flooring to the vinyl,’ Zoë explained.
‘We also added silicone around the sides of the walls to ensure that the flooring was secured.’
The result? A space that looks brighter, fresher, and far more inviting—all for less than the cost of a takeaway dinner.
One of the biggest concerns with budget-friendly do-it-yourself (DIY) solutions is whether they’ll stand the test of time, especially in a high-traffic, high-humidity environment like a caravan.
Zoë’s verdict, a year after installation, is reassuring: ‘In smaller places where we had small cut-offs, they have lifted a bit as they are very small pieces, but all of the long strips are still firmly intact.’
‘Try and use pieces as big as possible. Also, ensure the flooring is completely clean, and there shouldn’t be any issues at all. Very affordable DIY to help your room, caravan or home feel more homely.’
Other caravan owners quickly praised the transformation, commenting, ‘[Oh my god] this is so satisfying’ and ‘So much brighter and fresh’.
Some did ask about durability, to which Zoë replied: ‘So far, so good! Just ensure you give the floor a good clean and take time because if it’s done wrong or rushed, they will lift.’
While the exact vinyl planks Zoë used may no longer be in stock, Kmart still offers a range of self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles for $13 a pack. Options include stone or oak-look finishes; each pack contains eight 30cm x 30cm tiles made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and paper.
These tiles are easy to clean and are resistant to water, oil, and mildew. They are suitable for indoor use on smooth, hard surfaces like marble, solid wood, or wood-plastic composite.
Additionally, they are removable, making it easy to change your mind or update your look whenever you like.
A few words of caution: these tiles aren’t recommended for floating floorboards, asphalt, oily or embossed floors, or any surface with cushioning. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before you start your project.
You don’t need a big budget or a professional renovation team to make your caravan feel like home. With a bit of creativity and a few clever finds from stores like Kmart, you can transform your space in a weekend—and have fun doing it!
