Bargain hunting is a national pastime in Australia, and there’s nothing quite like the thrill of scoring a hefty discount on a coveted item. But what if the discount had a peculiar twist that left you scratching your head?
This is precisely what happened to an Australian mum, and her story might have you questioning the fairness of it all, or rushing to your nearest Bunnings to try your luck.
Montana Older, an Australian mother, recently took to social media to share a curious incident involving her husband, their daughter, and a children’s tool kit at the popular hardware chain, Bunnings Warehouse.
The tool kit, which was initially priced at $50, was unexpectedly slashed in half, but not for the reasons you might think.

In her video, Older explained that her husband, while purchasing the 14-piece kids’ tool kit intended for their daughter, mentioned offhandedly to the cashier that it was for his little girl.
To his surprise, a Bunnings staff member responded by offering the tool kit for just $25—a generous 50 per cent discount.
‘The lady took him to the front, and said, “Just give it to him for $25,”‘ Older recounted.
While the discount was welcome, it raised some eyebrows, including Older’s.
In her video, she pondered, ‘Why, because she’s a girl, is it half price?’
The implication that gender might play a role in pricing struck a chord with Older, who pointed out the inconsistency with the broader societal push for equality.
‘If anything, it should be the same price. Isn’t that what we’re fighting for?’ she questioned.
The TikTok community was quick to chime in with their theories.
‘Maybe she was into your husband?’ one commenter proposed, while others echoed the sentiment.
However, former Bunnings staff members offered a more mundane explanation. They suggested that the tool kit was likely part of leftover Christmas stock or a clearance item, which would justify the price reduction.
Bunnings employees are known to exercise some discretion when marking down low-stock or promotional items, especially if they’re trying to clear out inventory.
‘We are allowed to mark down items that are low stock or stock that we are trying to get rid of,’ one employee explained in the comments section of Montana’s post.
