Iconic Australian brand no longer locally owned after $259M buyout

The retail landscape has just witnessed a significant shake-up as The Reject Shop, a household name for bargain hunters in the Land Down Under, has been snapped up by the Canadian discount retail behemoth Dollarama in a staggering $259 million acquisition.

This deal, which has sent ripples through the retail sector, saw Dollarama offering a generous $6.68 per share for The Reject Shop, a figure that more than doubles its closing price of $3.15 per share on Wednesday, according to the Australian Financial Review. This bold move not only reflects the Canadian giant’s confidence in the Australian market but also signals a potential revitalisation for the beloved Australian retailer.

For those unfamiliar with The Reject Shop, it’s a treasure trove for frugal shoppers, offering a wide array of goods from household cleaning products to handy storage solutions. With its roots firmly planted in Australian soil, the discount variety retailer has become a go-to destination for those looking to stretch their dollars further.

The Reject Shop’s journey began under the majority ownership of billionaire Raphael Germinder’s Kin Group, but now it’s set to embark on a new chapter under the Dollarama banner. With over 1,600 stores in Canada and a growing presence in Latin America, including countries like Colombia, Guatemala, and El Salvador, Dollarama is no stranger to the discount retail game.

Steven Fisher, The Reject Shop’s board chairman, hailed the takeover as a ‘milestone’ for the company. He expressed the board’s belief that the transaction would benefit shareholders and stakeholders alike, aligning with their priority to deliver shareholder value.

In a retail environment that’s increasingly competitive, especially with the rise of online shopping giants like Temu and Shein, Dollarama’s CEO Neil Rossy remains optimistic. He’s looking forward to what he describes as ‘exciting growth in the coming years.’

Rossy’s confidence is not unfounded; the physical presence of discount stores like The Reject Shop provides a unique shopping experience that online platforms can’t replicate, offering instant gratification and the thrill of the hunt for bargains.

‘We look forward to embarking on this new chapter of Dollarama’s international growth journey with the local management team and its more than 5,000 employees across Australia. We are confident that the business will have an exciting future,’ he said.

We at YourLifeChoices are keen to see how this takeover will impact the shopping experience for our over-50s community. Will the expansion lead to better deals and more accessible shopping options?

  1. The Reject Shop is the only place I can find ‘Shower Sparkle’, a spray that you daily spray on your shower screen/tiles after your shower, to prevent the build up of soap scum. It used to be in both Coles & Woolies, but now they miss out on a sale.

  2. Love our local Reject Shop especially the great new ranges they have had recently. We also have a Silly Sollies – nothing over $5 – and have bought quite a lot of their “stuff” to decorate our house for sale. Last week went in and they had a fabulous range of artificial flowers – they now grace the entrance to our home.

  3. This the change reject needed. They have made ridiculously low profits for a few years now due to their stagnant and generally unremarkable buying and ranging. Let’s hope the new owners bring a fresh and more dynamic strategy to the stores using the extensive resources of Canada and it’s proximity to the USA , as the current unremarkable buying team might be Australian, but are frankly devoid of any imagination and the stores have traded poorly. This hopefully is the change that reject store needs to truly become the no 1 Discount Store it should be for all consumers.

  4. I hope they will still have the card factory and it’s cheap cards love this as its a UK and all the UK sweets and stuff as its now the only place I can buy from as all the other places have gone so please keep the UK stuff
