If there’s one thing we can all agree on, keeping the kitchen tidy—especially those tricky under-sink cupboards—can feel like a never-ending battle. No matter how often you reorganise, it reverts to chaos when you turn your back.
Does this sound familiar? You’re not alone! But thanks to a clever Kmart shopper, a new, budget-friendly solution is taking the internet by storm—and it might just be the answer to your storage woes.

Let’s face it: the cupboard under the kitchen sink is a magnet for clutter. Between cleaning sprays, sponges, dish brushes, and those mystery bottles you’re sure you’ll use ‘one day’, it’s easy for things to get out of hand.
Every bit of space counts for many of us, especially those who’ve downsized or are living in older homes with limited storage. Enter Jess Brouwer, a mum of three, who’s become a social media sensation for practical home organisation tips.
Brouwer recently shared a game-changing hack using two humble Kmart items: an $8 magnetic basket and a $9 broom gripper.
With a few tweaks, she transformed her under-sink chaos into a model of order—and the best part? The whole setup costs less than $20.
Here’s how she did it:
1. Ditch the magnets, embrace the adhesive: She started by removing the magnetic strip from the back of the basket. Instead, she used four Command hanging strips (those handy, removable adhesive strips) to attach the basket securely to the inside of her cupboard door.
2. Maximise vertical space: She filled the basket with her most-used cleaning products and sponges, making them easy to grab quickly.
3. Tame the dish brush: Next to the basket, she installed the broom gripper, perfect for holding her silicone dish brush upright and out of the way.
Brouwer said the hack has been a ‘complete game-changer’ for her family, and unlike some organisation fads, it’s easy to maintain.
‘It’s created more storage and makes it much easier to access those regularly-used products. The broom gripper holds the dish brush perfectly,’ she explained.

Tips for a smooth installation
Brouwer’s top tip? Before sticking anything down, ensure the cupboard door will still close!
‘Check that the basket isn’t going to hit the bottom of the sink or any shelves before installing,’ she advised.
Many Australian homes—especially those built before walk-in pantries and custom cabinetry—have limited kitchen storage.
This hack is an excellent example of how creativity (and a trip to Kmart) can help you make the most of what you’ve got. Plus, it’s renter-friendly: the Command strips mean you can remove everything without leaving a mark.
The response online has been overwhelmingly positive. Followers have flooded Brouwer’s Instagram with comments like: ‘Brilliant idea with the broom gripper!’
One commenter said, ‘So much extra storage—love it!’
Another shared, ‘I have one on the side of my dryer but love how you did this for under a sink.’
