If there’s one thing we love about Australian ingenuity, it’s the way everyday people find clever solutions to life’s little annoyances—often with a bit of help from Kmart.
Kmart fans are famous for their creative hacks, from turning tablecloths into chic curtains to squeezing extra storage under the sink. But one mum’s latest discovery might take the cake for the most unexpectedly brilliant use of a bathroom staple.

Meet Deanna, a self-confessed Kmart enthusiast who recently shared her kitchen game-changer on social media. Her secret weapon? The viral $15 Stone Dry Bath Mat and Tray Set—yes, a bath mat, but not as you know it.
Deanna originally picked up the Stone Dry Bath Mat and Tray Set for her bathroom. However, she soon realised it could solve a common kitchen conundrum: where to dry dishes without cluttering the benchtop or dealing with soggy, smelly towels.
Instead of spending $50 on a fancy drying rack, she repurposed the bath mat as a dish-drying station—and was so impressed that she bought a second one!
‘It’s fantastic, I really love it. For the price, it was great,’ Deanna raved. ‘If you look online for anything remotely similar to this, you’re looking at like $50.’
The secret is in the mat’s stone material, which absorbs water quickly and keeps your benchtop dry. Unlike traditional fabric mats, it doesn’t develop that unpleasant damp smell and looks sleek and modern—no more eyesore next to the sink.
Plus, it’s a breeze to clean: wash with soapy water and wipe down with a cloth. Deanna recommends giving it a quick wipe if there’s a lot of excess water to prevent any build-up.
Another bonus? The bath mat is much larger than Kmart’s kitchen-specific stone drying mat (60cm x 39cm versus 40cm x 30cm), giving you more space for plates, glasses, and even pots and pans.
And the included tray is perfect for keeping dishwashing liquid or sponges tidy and contained.
‘I usually leave it just near the sink, and it’s great. It picks up any of the residue that comes out, and even the water off my hands, it collects that, and then I can just wipe it down,’ Deanna explained.
If you’re a fan of more space (and who isn’t?), Kmart has just released an even larger version of the stone dry bath mat, measuring 75cm by 50cm and featuring a stylish cube design.
Perfect for big families, entertainers, or anyone who likes to keep their kitchen looking sharp.
Deanna’s video quickly went viral, with fellow Kmart fans commenting to share their creative uses for the bath mat.
Some have used it as a drying mat for ages, while others use it under pet water bowls to catch drips and spills.
The comments section was full of praise. ‘Great idea,’ wrote one user.
‘That is genius!’ said another. One pet lover added, ‘I use mine for the water bowls for my cats.’
