Stopover in Abu Dhabi

Henry has managed to find some incredibly cheap airfares to Europe, but they include quite lengthy stopovers in Abu Dhabi. What can he do while he is there?

Q. Henry

I have found a number of cheap airfares to Europe but they all include rather lengthy stopovers in Abu Dhabi. What is there to do while I am there, as I don’t want to be just sitting around in the airport?

A. I understand your reluctance to spend hours just sitting around in the terminal – there are only so many cups of coffee you can consume! There are a number of things you can do if you have more than four hours to spare in Abu Dhabi. Make sure you arrange a transit visa with your airline before you leave and you will be able to explore the city and its surrounds.

Hail a taxi or jump aboard a bus to take you into the city or to visit some of the following attractions.

Visit Ferrari World the largest indoor theme park, open from 11am to 8pm daily.

Indulge in some retail therapy at the Souk Qaryat Al Bery

Visit the landmark Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque which is open daily from 9am to 10pm , except on Friday morning, which is for worshippers only.

If you belong to an airline frequent flyer programme you may be able to take advantage of the facilities at one of the seven airport lounges.

Alternatively you can catch up on your sleep in one of the sleeping pods in Terminal 3 or at the Airport Hotel in Terminal 1, specifically designed to accommodate travellers in transit.

My wife & I lived in Abu Dhabi for a couple of years and enjoyed immensely. If you can stretch the stay to a couple of days, then in addition to what has been posted, I suggest a visit to the Emirates Palace Hotel (dome is bigger that US Congress & St Peters, 16 tonne of gold fittings, much marble, beautiful outlook), a stroll down the corniche and avisit to Al Ain which is an hour’s drive from Abu Dhabi.
