Gmail changes your inbox again

Are the latest changes to Gmail user friendly, or simply a money grab by Google?

Gmail changes your inbox again

Just as users of Google’s free email service were getting used to the latest design changes, Gmail has released a new layout.

The new layout is meant to make browsing through your emails on a daily basis easier with specific tabs set up to sort emails for your automatically. Considering the introduction of the Promotions tab in this new design, one might think this new layout was driven by Google’s desire to monetise the Gmail platform.

As shown in the introduction video above, once your Gmail inbox receives the upgrades in the next couple of weeks, your emails will be sorted in Primary, Social, Promotions and Updates tabs.

Users who have received the update have shared mixed opinions about the new design, but those who don’t enjoy the new design have either turned off the Promotions tab or switched back to the old design.

To switch back to the old design or to remove the Promotions tab, click on the plus sign which appears to the right of your Gmail inbox. To disable just the Promotions tab, deselect it and then hit save. If you wish to go back to your old design inbox, deselect all the tabs and hit save.

Have you received the update? Do you like the new design?

At first I thought: What? Another intrusion from Google! Now that I am using the new look I am in awe of the way they can sort my emails for me! Is this a plus or a minus? Well, provided I remember to look beyond the primary ones it's OK. The minus of not seeing the promotional emails immediately is that I could miss out on a free ticket somewhere, by not being among the first to respond. I will give it a bit longer but thanks Drew for telling us how to disable it if we choose.

I can see the changes being of some benefit to users who receive a large number of emails. I usually get less than 20 a day and check several times a day, so the sorting is a bit of overkill for me. I was quite happy with the way things were and have disabled the new design.

I'm with you ozimarco. Haven't Google ever heard of - ' if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it? '

As a long term user of gmail, I have to say I hate this new innovation! They have obviously never heard of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I very quickly went back to the old version after trying it for a day. My daughter did as well.

GMail user for years. Persevered with the new look until I read an article several weeks ago about how to revert. Happy again. Most people are likely to use their computers and allied software as mere tools to get a task done. That includes email. I find it intensely annoying to suddenly have to learn new skills to carry out my daily productivity. New versions of Office I find particularly obnoxious to have to use and relocate all the shortcuts etc one is used to with the "old" productivity tool

Hate the new email sorting. I checked on the Internet yesterday to find out how to print an email (I had no problems with attachments) and also found out how to revert back to the previous unsorted version. I stopped using the Gmail app when I purchased my Samsung tablet ti use the ordinary mail app which doesn't sort by color coding for individual emails.

I don't mind about any changes. Just keeps my brain working figuring out what's new as all technology do. Just get annoyed when I borrowed a book on Google Apps dated 2009 and it was already obsolete, then bought another book and it was almost obsolete so just had to browse for instructions in using google applications which was somewhat frustrating when you don't know the terms used for what you're looking for.

I was so thrilled to read I can change back to the old gmail format, the new system doesn't appeal to me at all but then I don't get hundreds of emails a day and I can handle what I get quite well on my own.
