Are the latest changes to Gmail user friendly, or simply a money grab by Google?
Just as users of Google’s free email service were getting used to the latest design changes, Gmail has released a new layout.
The new layout is meant to make browsing through your emails on a daily basis easier with specific tabs set up to sort emails for your automatically. Considering the introduction of the Promotions tab in this new design, one might think this new layout was driven by Google’s desire to monetise the Gmail platform.
As shown in the introduction video above, once your Gmail inbox receives the upgrades in the next couple of weeks, your emails will be sorted in Primary, Social, Promotions and Updates tabs.
Users who have received the update have shared mixed opinions about the new design, but those who don’t enjoy the new design have either turned off the Promotions tab or switched back to the old design.
To switch back to the old design or to remove the Promotions tab, click on the plus sign which appears to the right of your Gmail inbox. To disable just the Promotions tab, deselect it and then hit save. If you wish to go back to your old design inbox, deselect all the tabs and hit save.
