Lost documents, found!

The worst part about using a computer is saving a document and then not being able to find it. Webmaster, Drew, shows you an easy way to find any document, picture or video you may have misplaced.

The process of finding each of these files is differs slightly, so Drew explains the best way to search for your missing file.

This example has been created using the Windows XP operating system. The second step will differ depending on the view your windows is in. Some XP users may find they only have to click on ‘Search’ instead of also selecting ‘For files or folders’.

How to find a document

Click on the ‘Start’ button at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.

Click on ‘Search’ then select ‘For files or folders’.

On the left hand side of the screen click ‘Documents (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.)’.

From the options provided, select when your document was last used.

As you are unsure of the file name, in the box ‘All or part of the document name’ type .doc (This is the extension name for all word documents. If searching for an Excel document replace .doc with .xls)

You can now either select ‘Search’ or refine your search by clicking the ‘Use advanced search options’ button. Here you can add further details to narrow down the search options.

When you’ve entered as many hints as you can, select ‘Search’ and you will find the document you’re looking for in the provided list.

How to find a picture

Click on the ‘Start’ button at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.

Click on ‘Search’ then select ‘For files or folders’.

On the left hand side of the screen click ‘Pictures, music or video’.

Click in the box next to ‘Pictures and Photos’.

If you know the extension name of your file (most photos are .jpg) enter it into the ‘All or part of the file name’ field.

Now click on ‘Use advanced search options. You can now specify when the photo was modified (if you have not changed it, this will be the date you took the photo). Select ‘Specify dates’ and enter a date range of a week around the time you think you took the photo. If you are really unsure, search within the month you know it was taken.

Click ‘Search’ and you find the list of images your computer has found for you – the misplaced one is bound to be there.

How to find a video

Click on the ‘Start’ button at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.

Click on ‘Search’ then select ‘For files or folders’.

On the left hand side of the screen, click ‘Pictures, music or video’.

Select ‘Video’.

Now click on “Use advanced search options”.

You may be able to limit the amount of videos displayed by implementing a size limit for your search. If you know the video is quite large (more than 1 MB), click in the circle next to ‘Large’.

Select ‘Search’ and your video will be displayed among the list provided.
