Facebook post leads to arrest

An 18-year-old man from the United States was arrested over the weekend after his friends dobbed him into local authorities because of a Facebook status update in which he bragged about drink driving and hitting a car.

According to the Oregan news site The Daily Astorian, police officer Nicole Riley was tipped off by the one of Jacob Cox-Brown’s friends that he had been in an accident while driving drunk. The friend also sent a screen capture of the Facebook post to the officer who earlier that day had attended a hit and run incident where a car has been sideswiped resulting in significant damage. After receiving the tip, police went to Mr Cox-Brown’s house where they found his car with damage consistent to the hit and run incident and were able to match pieces left behind at the scene.

As a daily social media user, I was glad to hear that Mr Cox-Brown’s friends not only reported the Facebook post, but that the police followed up the lead and brought him to justice. Let’s just hope that those committing crimes in Australia are stupid enough to post “Drivin drunk… classic 😉 but to whoever’s vehicle I hit I am sorry. :P” such as Mr Cox-Brown did, so that they too can be brought to justice.
