We already spend so much time looking at our phones. What if we could use this tech obsession to our advantage? It’s easy to stay fit and healthy with the abundance of fitness apps available today. Here are five great free apps to get you moving and stay motivated.

1. Couch to 5K

Have you always looked at joggers and wished you could do that too? Well, now you can. Couch to 5K will turn you from a couch potato into a runner. It offers a free eight-week training program that gives users three workouts per week in preparation for a 5K race. Available on iOS and Android.

2. Run Keeper

This app isn’t just for tracking your run training. It also tracks walking, cycling and swimming, rowing, skating and even wheelchair activities. The GPS feature helps you see how far you’ve gone on a map, and allows you to save the route for the next time. The app also tracks kilometres, calories burned and heart rate. Available on iOS and Android.

3. Seven

Who says you can’t do a workout in under 10 minutes? Seven uses a form of training that is widely recognised as the most effective way to burn fat: interval training. Over the course of seven minutes, the app cycles through 15 different basic exercises for 30 seconds each. Expect to work out your whole body, performing jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups and more. One great feature is the choice of voice-over characters, from Kung-Fu Master to Hippie. Available on iOS and Android.

4. Daily Yoga

The devoted yogis out there will love this one. You’ll have access to more than 50 yoga classes, all shot in HD video, with just a few taps of the screen. Each class focuses on a different aspect of the practice, from increasing flexibility to strengthening your core. Available on iOS and Android.

5. Freeletics

Looking for a way to build muscle without having to buy equipment? Freeletics has over 900 bodyweight workouts, lasting anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. There’s really something for everyone, and you can workout anywhere, anytime. Available on iOS and Android.

    You mentioned the core strength required to avoid lower back pain but none of these apps are expecially applicable to that.

    “Free apps to get you moving and stay motivated” is your recommendation?

    I do think it unacceptable in the extreme for you to be touting applications for which you are required to surrender your personal information and privacy. For instance (and this is for one of your recommended apps only):

    1. Allow the app to view one or more of:
    – information about activity on your device (so anything you do on your device they will have access to),
    – which apps you have running (they will know all the apps you run, including banking applications, emails to CentreLink, etc., etc., etc., …),
    – your browsing history (everything you have looked at on the internet, if you haven’t cleared your browsing history) and
    – your bookmarks.

    2. Uses one or more of:
    – your accounts on your device, and
    – your profile data (all the personal data you have on your device).

    3. Uses one or more of:
    – files on your device, such as images, videos, and
    – your devices external storage (even things you back up on the ‘cloud’ for safe and secure storage, they have access to).

    4. Allows the app to view information about wi-fi networking, such as:
    – whether wi-fi is enables, and
    – names of connected wi-fi devices.

    5. Allows the app to determine the phone number and device details whether a call is active and the remote number you are calling (straight from J. Edgar Hoover’s dreams).

    Such an invasion of personal privacy and your intimate details isn’t acceptable. To present such applications as helpful to you target audience is nothing short of shameful, exploitative and beyond the bounds of good judgement.

    SHAME ON YOU. No warnings, no indication, no ‘be careful’ messages. Just here are some app which will be good for your health with zero thought as to their potential adverse impact on your wealth.

    I do think it rather nasty to shame the author and/or this usually very helpful site. Perhaps someone’s having a bad day. In any event, I would find it remarkable indeed to find a free app – let alone any app – that does not require personal information.

    We’re all older and wiser, and I think rather than blasting a largely anonymous article for information that is not provided we can think for ourselves and find a way of finding fitness tips that do not try to collect our information. Indeed, there is a wonderful article on this very site about how to start exercising sensibly, and there is no app suggestion at all.

    Just for balance, let me also state that not all of us are quite so worried about giving these details – perhaps some of us have a better handle on technology. I know that a great many grandparents and great grandparents make the effort to learn about these things in order to communicate with the younger set on their terms.
