Free e-books

E-book readers continue to be one of the most popular buys for tech savvy Australians, such as YOURLifeChoices member Lois. While she loves her new gadget, Lois would like to know where she can download free e-books.

Q. Lois
I have just purchased an e-book reader and understand that there are free downloads of books I can get.  I am finding it hard to find them and then to download.  Could you please kindly give me some tips?

A. Congratulations on your new purchase! We’re big fans of free eBooks, and our favourite website is gutenberg.net.au. Project Guttenberg offers eBooks which are no longer in copyright free of charge, so it has thousands of the classics on offer.

The Nook Bookstore, operated by Barnes and Noble, also offers free e-book downloads. You do have to go through a short registration process, but the books can be downloaded as PDFs, so you can also read on your computer. Find out which books are available free at Barnsandnoble.com.

Free e-books can be obtained from your local library. With our library you have to download a free app called Overdrive to use the service. I also believe you can't use a kindle for this purpose. I have an Apple ipad. It's worth contacting your local library to find out.

I have downloaded over 1,000 free ebooks from Amazon. I have a Kindle but I think the books can also be downloaded to other ereaders. All you have to do is sign up for a free account. If you like romance books for example, go to this page Free Romance Books click to follow the discussion, and you will get emails daily with all the free romance books put on Amazon that day.
Another place to go is www.ereaderiq.com You can then choose what genre of book you are interested in, and you will get a daily email from them with free books in each genre you chose.
At the present time, I would have nearly 2,000 free books on my Kindle.

There are also a myriad of free Kindle books.

    Go to:amazon.com/kindle
In the search bar, type in 'free books'
This will bring up a list of free Kindle books.

NOTE: It is not necessary to have a Kindle to read these.
You can download the Kindle PC installer
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/kindle/pc/download

Once downloaded, you can read any Kindle book from your PC

Hope this is of use to someone

    Kind regards

PS you will need to set up a (free) account

I have found manybooks.net a very good site. Also download Calibre which is not only an e-reader for your computer but also allows you to change the style of the book, epub, kindle etc.
