Originally launched in India as an affordable way for students to gain internet access, the Datawind UbiSlate 7Ci tablet computer is now available for order in Australia at just $55 plus $30 delivery fee.
The tablet is run off a 1GHz processor with 512 RAM and 4GB of storage (which is expandable up to 32GB with a microUSB). As a comparison, a similar processor and amount of RAM was standard practice in computers about six years ago and similar specifications are used in administration computers all around Australia today. The tablet also includes built in wifi.
The 4GB of storage won’t go very far, but if you are only downloading a few Apps and using the tablet for internet browsing and emails, you don’t really need any more than 4GB anyway.
I am taken aback by the price of this tablet and can’t figure out how Datawind are making a profit from this product. Sure, it isn’t the fastest computer in the world, but it has been built for the Indian climate, meaning it will work during the hot Australian summer. And it does everything you need from a tablet, without all the bells and whistles.
A great entry-level tablet.
