Control how you appear in Google

How does your name appear on Google? Whether there are some unfortunate links which you need removed, blogs which you don’t want to be associated with or even your personal information published online, Drew enables you to fix how you Google.

Almost everyone has said something to someone which they wish they could take back. In the digital age we live in, the dangers of what we say or do are amplified ten fold, as the co-founder and chairmen of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, found out with the release of the 2010 movie about Facebook called The Social Network. A section of the movie focuses on him writing nasty things about his ex-girlfriend on his blog while also writing about creating a website which compares women to farm animals. His ex-girlfriend in the movie sums up the digital age perfectly by saying “The Internet’s not written in pencil, Mark, it’s written in ink”. Once you write something, it is very hard to take it back.

Taking control of your name
Internet security company Norton has created a website called NortonTopSearch which allows you to create an advertisement which will be displayed to people who search your name until it has been clicked five times. This is a great way to take control of your name if something which may hurt your reputation is currently showing up in first position and should give you ample time to have it removed. Simply visit, watch the video and follow the prompts to set up the free ad.

Please note – NortonTopSearch needs to verify that you are setting this up for your name. To prevent any fraudulent ads being placed, you will need to have a Facebook account which can verify your name.

Keeping your information off the web
The most important rule to keeping your personal information from being displayed on the internet is being careful with what you post. In the past week there have been several comments on the YOURLifeChoices website where members have posted their email addresses to get in contact with other members. Once it was clear that the address had been received, they were removed. The main reason for YOURLifeChoices removing this information is to prevent internet robots, which crawl through websites all over the world, from picking up the email address and adding it to spam email lists. If for any reason you do need to share your email address on an open forum, it is best to use the following style: youremailaddress (at) instead of using the @ symbol.

If your private information is posted on a public website and you cannot remove the information yourself, read through Google’s tips for actioning the removal of the information/photos from the website and from search.
