Managing internet bookmarks

YOURLifeChoices member George has received a hand-me-down computer from his son filled with ‘bookmarks’. Drew explains how George can delete the current bookmarks and add his favourites.

Q.
Hello team,

My son has given me his old computer which includes reams and reams of Bookmarks and Favourites which I want to clear out, but don’t know how to. Can you please tell me how to delete these and how to replace them with my own?

Thank you
George

A. Hi George,
It sounds like you could be using either one of three programs, as Internet Explorer typically uses ‘Favourites’ while Mozilla Firefox and Safari typically use ‘Bookmarks’.

Deleting History
Before we start removing and adding new bookmarks, you should give your internet browser a proper clean out which includes all of the search history.

To delete history in Internet Explorer select ‘Tools’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu select ‘Delete browsing history’. In the pop-up menu, select every box and select delete.

To delete history in Mozilla Firefox select ‘Tools’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu select ‘Clear recent history’. In the pop-up menu, select ‘Everything’ from the dropdown box and then select ‘Clear Now’.

To delete history in Safari select ‘History’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu select ‘Clear History’. Then select ‘Clear’ from the pop-up window.

Internet Explorer
Adding bookmarks
To add a website to your favourites, navigate to the website. Click on ‘Favourites’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu, click ‘Add to favourites’. Change the name of the website to what you want it to appear as and then click ‘Add’.

Deleting bookmarks
To delete a website from your favourites, click on ‘Favourites’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu, Right mouse click on the favourite you wish to remove and select ‘Delete’ from the pop-up menu.

Mozilla Firefox
Adding bookmarks

To add a website to your bookmarks, navigate to the website. Click on ‘Bookmarks’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu, click ‘Bookmark This Page’. Change the name of the website to what you want it to appear as and then click ‘Done’. You can also drag and drop the website’s icon onto the bookmarks toolbar if you would like superfast access to the website. (Drag the icon from the left of the address to just under it).

Deleting bookmarks
To delete a website from your bookmarks, click on ‘Bookmarks’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu, Right mouse click on the bookmark you wish to remove and select ‘Delete’ from the pop-up menu.

Safari
Adding bookmarks
To add a website to your bookmarks, navigate to the website. Click on ‘Bookmarks’ from the menu at the top. From the dropdown menu, click ‘Add Bookmark’. A pop-up menu will now appear with two different areas to change. In the first area which includes a dropdown menu, select ‘Bookmarks Bar’. In the second area, change the current information to the name of the website you are bookmarking. The bookmark will now appear in the bar below where you type in website addresses called the bookmark bar.

Deleting bookmarks
To delete a bookmark, right click on the bookmark on your bookmark bar. From the dropdown menu select ‘Delete’.

Good luck, and enjoy a much easier browsing experience.
