As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of technology and connectivity, it’s no secret that Australians have come to rely heavily on their mobile devices for everything from staying in touch with loved ones to managing daily tasks. However, with this increased dependency comes the inevitable reality of rising costs, and for some Australians, a new price hike is just around the corner.
Optus, Australia’s second-largest telecommunications company, has confirmed that it will be increasing the price of some of its popular mobile phone plans from June 4, 2025. The price hike, which was communicated to customers via email, will affect several of the telco’s Choice, Choice Plus, and Business Mobile Plus plans.
The monthly plans are set to rise by $2 to $6, a change that will undoubtedly impact many Australians who are already juggling various household expenses. Optus managing director of customer solutions, Anthony Shiner, has cited the need for ongoing investments in network and technology improvements as the driving force behind these increases. Shiner assures that these adjustments will bolster Optus’s commitment to keeping Australians connected, enhancing the speed, coverage, and reliability of their network, as well as advancing technology.
For those concerned about their device payment plans, Shiner has confirmed that these will remain unchanged. Customers affected by the plan alterations can expect to receive detailed information through email or SMS, outlining the specifics of the changes.
In an attempt to soften the blow, Optus is also increasing data allowances for impacted customers, with boosts ranging from an additional 20GB to 40GB per month, depending on the plan. This move is designed to ensure that customers can continue to enjoy their mobile activities without interruption.
Shiner acknowledges the financial pressures many customers are facing, with a range of expenses on the rise. He emphasises that Optus’s team is ready to assist those in need or with questions about the changes.
The upcoming changes mean that subscribers to the telco’s most affordable postpaid plan, the small Optus Choice Plus, will see their monthly bill rise from $52 to $55. While this increase may seem modest, it is important to note that it still positions Optus as a more cost-effective option compared to Telstra’s mobile plans, which start at $65 per month for 50GB.
For those considering alternatives, Vodafone offers plans starting at $39 per month for the first 12 months, increasing to $49 per month thereafter, for 100GB of data, which is typically 50GB.
This isn’t the first time Optus customers have faced a price hike. Just last year, in August, the company raised its postpaid phone plans by $3 or $6 per service, attributing the increase to the ‘increasing costs’ required to maintain and provide its network.
As we brace ourselves for these changes, it’s crucial for Optus customers to review their current plans and budgets. It may also be an opportune time to shop around and compare offerings from other providers to ensure you’re getting the best value for your money.
