How secure is your smartphone?

YourLifeChoices member Jennifer is looking to buy a new smartphone and is worried about the security surrounding fingerprint and facial ID technologies on different versions of the iPhone.

Q. Jennifer
I’m interested in upgrading to a smartphone with fingerprint or facial recognition but have reservations about having my fingerprint or facial ID accessible by the smartphone provider. Is fingerprint and facial recognition software safe and where is the information stored?
Many thanks and keep up the good work,
Jennifer

A. When I first purchased my iPhone with fingerprint technology back in 2015, I too had reservations about the security surrounding the system and where my information would be stored. I then also had those exact same feelings when upgrading to the new iPhone X this year and being confronted with the new facial recognition software.

Apple made the decision early on to store fingerprint and facial recognition information locally in a secure area of the device’s processor, instead of in the cloud. This makes the information inaccessible by Apple and extremely difficult for users to externally access the stored information.
