How to sell your old smartphone

Have you been wondering lately if it’s time to upgrade your smartphone? If you’re ready to purchase a new smartphone or tablet, or you’ve already done so, don’t let your old device just sit around, as it will decrease in value quickly.

If you’re ready to sell, ask yourself a couple of questions about your device:

  • Is it in good condition?
  • Does it work well?
  • How old is it?

If your smartphone is working well, in good condition and only a couple of years old, you may be able to get a handsome sum for it.

However, if it’s more than a couple of years old or maybe has a broken screen, you might be better off repurposing it or giving it to a friend or family member. By purchasing a smartphone cradle for your car, you can easily repurpose it as a GPS navigator, remote control or security camera.

The first thing to do before you sell your smartphone is to ensure that your personal data has been completely removed from the device.

Once your data is secured, you should look around on the internet to see how much your phone is worth. eBay and Gumtree are easy places to find this out. Just type in your phone model and see how much it averages when sold. If you’re happy to sell it for around that price, then the next step is deciding where to sell it.

Pawnbroker
Dropping in at a local pawnbroker or Cash Converters will be a quick and straightforward experience, however the convenience comes at a cost, as you will definitely receive less money for your device.

Gumtree
Gumtree is a free-to-use and friendly website and it won’t take a cut of your sale or charge you to list an item. Also, transactions are almost always carried out in cash.

If you live in a populated area you will probably get quite a few responses for an item. However, if you live in an isolated area you might not receive so many offers, or people may ask you to post the device to them, which can be risky. Gumtree buyers are also likely to do a bit of haggling to get a good price.

eBay
eBay will take quite a bit more effort than the above methods, but you will be able to reach a large audience and it offers some seller protection as well. Unfortunately it will charge you a fee to post an ad, and it will take another fee if your item sells.

Apple
If the smartphone you are selling is an iPhone or iPad, Apple now offer a trade-in service if you are purchasing a new iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately they will only pay you with store credit that can be used towards purchasing a new Apple device.

This by all means doesn’t cover all of the options for selling your device, but they are the main four to consider. Another is that your phone provider might offer a trade in service.
