How to use iPhone panorama mode

If you have an iPhone 4S or later, you’re in possession of a nifty photography function about which you might not know.

The Panorama or ‘pano’ mode has been built into the iOS Camera app of the iPhone 4S, 5 and 6. What’s fantastic about this feature is you can take a 240-degree photo of any scene you like. It works by stitching together the photographed area, piece by piece, to create one wide-angled photo.

Some scenes are just crying out to become a panoramic photo, e.g. landscapes of the beach or mountains, or the family spread out on the couch.

Here’s how to take a panoramic shot on your phone:

Step 1: Open the Camera app

Step 2: Use your finger to scroll along the bottom bar on the phone until you find ‘PANO’

Step 3: Hold the phone up vertically to the scene you want to photograph

Step 4: Tap the Shutter button to begin the panorama shot; the iPhone will instruct you to move slowly from left to right.

Tip: It is vital to move slowly and steadily in order to get a pristine shot. If people or objects in the scene move as they are being captured, it will result in them becoming distorted in the photo. You might need to practise a few times before you get the hang of it – never fear, you might not get the shots right every time but at least you’ll be able to have a good chuckle when you see your warped creations.

Still using an iPhone 4? Don’t worry about missing out – there are a few free panorama apps, such as Panorama 360 and Panorama Free that you can download.

Android users can also check out the free apps Panorama 360 and Photaf Panorama.
