App of the month September 2015

Tour the world from your smartphone or tablet using Google’s new Streetview app, and unlock the key to hundreds of apps a year for free with the app of the month.

Google Streetview

Streetview has been hidden within the Google Maps app for some time but it has now been reborn as a stand alone app. For those of you unfamiliar with Streetview, it is a collection of 360-degree panoramic photographs, which are collected by cars driving around streets. The software enables you to look around in 3d as if you were standing in that location, and you can walk up and down the street as well.

Initially you could only explore streets in the app, but recently Google has started adding some unique locations to the app, such as Antarctica, the Great Barrier Reef and even Diagon Alley (a set used in the Harry Potter films).

Along with an overhaul to the user interface, the new app brings the ability to add your own 360-degree photos to the app, and explore those of others.

Available for free on iPhone, iPad, Android and web.

AppGratis

Our second app this month is a gateway to hundreds of free apps released every year. Here’s how it works: each day a new app is available for free through AppGratis. The app gets some advertising in return for allowing users to download for free, but only for a 24-hour period.

Daily apps range from games to photo editing software to weather services – all available for free for one day only. Unfortunately, AppGratis has run into some trouble with Apple’s guidelines, and has been pulled from the app store as a result, but this hasn’t stopped them from releasing free apps every day on their website.

Android users can download the app here.

iPhone and iPad (and Android) users can visit the website to see which app is available each day for free. You can also subscribe to their mailing list to get a daily email notifying you of the app released for free on the day.
