Best apps for busting boredom

A lot is said about how consumed our lives have become by technology, and the negative effects it may be having on everything from our mental health to social interactions. While this may well be the case, for those occasions when you’ve got time up your sleeve and twiddling your thumbs won’t quite cut it, there are some great time-wasting apps for smartphones.

Words With Friends

The online version of Scrabble has the potential to divide friendships. But don’t let that deter you from entering into a fun, fierce and fanatical game of wordplay. You can play against people you know or strangers, and have multiples games on the go. Warning: you will get addicted.

Instagram

The now-Facebook owned photo-sharing app has been around since 2010 and has more than 800 million users worldwide. Needless to say, it’s big. You can easily while away hours browsing photos, uploading and editing your own, and ‘following’ everyone from Pope Francis to Jimmy Barnes. Warning: you will definitely become addicted to scrolling the feed.

Sporcle

A fantastic app for those who fancy testing their grey matter, Sporcle has a seemingly infinite number of quizzes in categories ranging from geography to television to language. The quizzes have time limits, making it that extra bit challenging, and new ones are constantly being added so there’s no danger of getting bored. Warning: you will get addicted to trying to beat your scores.

What are your favourite smartphone apps?

I'm sick of hearing about bloody apps. a phone is for speaking to people. Tell us about computer software.

If you really want to exercise your brain, try solving chess problems. (I compose them!)

Not interested in so many Apps -- all I want on my phone are Fires near me/Weather/Traffic/NRMA/Petrol/ and such -- not interested in emails/and all other stuff such as emails -- I will get them on my computer or someone can ring me or SMS me.
If I have to wait somewhere I will take a book.
