Your iPhone is tracking you

While it may not surprise you that your iPhone is tracking you, did you realise that your every movement is recorded as a location along with a date and time stamp?

The extent of the tracking shocked me when I stumbled across the settings in my iPhone early this week. While the data is encrypted and Apple says that it can’t read or use any of the stored information, I was shocked by the accuracy and depth of the stored data.

Find your tracking data on your iPhone
Open your iPhone. Open the ‘Settings’ app.
Scroll down and tap ‘Privacy’. Tap on ‘Location Services’.
Scroll to the bottom of this section and tap ‘System Services’.
Tap ‘Significant Locations’. You will be asked to verify your passcode, Touch ID or Face ID.
If ‘Significant Locations’ is turned on, you can now see the history of your movements, how many times you have visited specific locations, and date stamps by tapping the specific history log.

To delete all this personal history, at the bottom of the page, press ‘Clear History’.

You can opt to turn off Significant Locations altogether by tapping the button at the top of that page.
