200 million Yahoo accounts up for sale

The stolen records of 200 million email accounts are now for sale online.

200 million Yahoo accounts up for sale

A hacker is claiming to have stolen the login information of 200 million Yahoo accounts and is selling them online for US$1824 on a well-known black market website. The database of user information is believed to be from 2012, the same year another 450,000 Yahoo accounts were compromised.

Yahoo has acknowledged the hacking claim and released a statement saying its “security team is working to determine the facts”. The alleged hacker is the same person behind last month's release of 425 million Myspace and Tumblr accounts, adding a level of credibility to the claims.

A sample of the released data includes the email address, password, backup email address and date of birth of all users.

It would be wise for anyone with a current Yahoo account, or who has previously held a Yahoo account, to immediately reset their account password. Furthermore, if you included a backup email address, you should also update the password of that account.

With the number of recent hacking cases, do you feel that your personal information is still safe online?

I received an email from a scammer yesterday claiming to be from Yahoo. The email said I had requested to delete my email account and if this was not correct then click undo.
While I knew it was difficult to delete an email account I was still concerned but wise enough not to touch the click here button.
I sent the email to spam.
I changed my password and contacted Yahoo.
Yahoo informed me that any email sent from Yahoo has a large Y before it. That was most reassuring to know.

I have a Yahoo account which I seldom use, but from the trash, rubbish, and spam I get on it I believe Yahoo sells your info themselves. As far as hacking it, they will get sweet FA from mine.

They all track every word you write. Even on this site. ...and especially Google. So apart from the spooks taking care of our nation - which I am quite happy with - they are micro-casting rather than broadcasting what may be, but probably isn't, your every wish.
But hey - its free, that's what we exchange for giving up our privacy.

I was happily using google as a default browser when one day I suddenly had Yahoo.

I never signed up so it is still default.

A friend had her paypal account hacked last week and over a $1000 English Pounds taken.

It is being sorted out but the belief that Paypal is safe is obviously flawed.
