Facebook adds Interest Lists

A lot has changed in the past five years on Facebook. I can’t quite put my finger on exactly when my feed transformed from being all about friends and family to a news page for brands, organisations and advertisers, but it well and truly has occurred.

Facebook has noted a turn-off factor with some users recently, with complaints that ‘they have sold out’ and changed what the website actually does. Their reaction was to introduce a new feature called Interest Lists.

So why do I feel Interest Lists are a real game changer?

  • Interest Lists allow you to follow a brand page on Facebook without your account being made to ‘Like’ the page, in turn, becoming associated with it.
  • You can set up your Interest Lists so that they are private.
  • By un-liking all of your currently liked brand pages, your normal timeline will be reserved for posts from friends and family members only, with the occasional advertisement from Facebook.

How to set up an Interest List
Start by opening up Facebook and logging into your account.

In the search bar at the top, type in the name of the brand page you are looking to add to an Interest List, for example, YOURLifeChoices.

Now that you are on the brand’s page, locate the panel which has the ‘Like’ button (will show as Liked if you are already a fan) and ‘Message’ button. Beside these buttons is a symbol in the shape of a cog with a drop arrow next to it. Click on the cog and click on the first option that appears in the drop-down menu named ‘Add to Interest Lists…”.

If this is your first ever Interest List, you will be given two options, click on ‘New List’. The next screen will show YOURLifeChoices as the selected page. If you also want to add other already ‘Liked’ pages to this Interest List, click the ‘Pages’ option at the top left of this page and select other brand pages. Once you are happy with your selections, click ‘Next’ in the bottom right-hand corner.

In the box provided, type in the name of the list you are creating, such as ‘News’ and ensure you click the circle box below next to ‘Only Me’ so that your list is private and then click ‘Done’. If you wish to add any additional pages to this Interest List, simply repeat the process and instead of creating a ‘New List’, add the brand to the ‘News’ Interest List.

To access your Interest Lists, navigate to your home screen in Facebook and in the left-hand navigation bar, near the bottom will be an ‘Interests’ section with your ‘News’ Interest List listed below. Simply click on the list and you will find only information from these brands are displayed.

Will this new feature make you use Facebook more often?
