Whether you're entering the dating scene after a relationship break up, or have just been taking some time out, online dating is a good way to meet other like-minded singles. However, once it comes time to meet face-to-face, keep in mind these simple safety steps.

1. Meet in public places.
For a first meeting, always meet in a public place where other people are in close proximity. You may also want to consider going out with a group of people, or a double date. Never allow your date to pick you up from your home address.
2. Pay half of the bill.
It's always nice to have someone buy you a meal but in the interests of keeping all things equal and remove any obligation to "return" the favour, pay your share.
3. Alcohol affects your judgment.
A few drinks may calm the nerves but alcohol can cloud your judgment and lessens your inhibitions. Keep your drink in sight at all times and make sure you drink plenty of water. If possible, avoid alcohol on your first date.
4. Be on your guard
First date nerves and excitement can get the better of you but while you should give your date the benefit of the doubt, don’t accept all you’re told as gospel.
5. Go with your instinct
If something doesn't feel right, walk away. Don’t worry about hurting someone’s feelings, your safety and wellbeing is much more important.
6. Always let someone else know where you're going. Arrange a time to check in or maybe arrange to meet friends later on for a debrief!
7. Don’t give out your home number.
It's safer to give out a mobile phone number rather than your home number
8. Remember, safe sex is important

If things go well and you're willing to get between the sheets with your new friend, be bold and bring up the subject of safe sex.
