A commercial site hijacking his computer searches is driving YOURLifeChoices member Ivan nuts. Drew has a quick fix to banish this infection.
Q. I am having a lot of trouble with hijacking. Nearly every time I click on a website lately it is hijacked on to a commercial advertising site. It is becoming so bad that I can hardly click on to any desired site. How do I overcome this problem?
Ivan.
A. Hi Ivan,
It sounds as though your computer has a fairly common virus that is used to generate traffic and revenue to websites around the world. The virus has measures in place that disable your ability to download programs that can detect and remove it. Follow the instructions below to remove the virus.
Using an un-infected computer visit www.download.com and download Free – Trend Micro HijackThis to an usb flash drive.
Unplug your computer from the internet
Install HiJackThis on the infected computer
Run program, during which it will ask you to reconnect to the internet
The infection should now be removed
I went into the site you said – http://www.download.com – and couldn’t locate the Trend program at all. I searched for ages. Eventually I just googled the description and found it on another site. I haven’t downloaded it yet so i will tell you all how I go.
It can be downloaded from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/hijackthis/
But read the instructions at that link – it does not automatically fix anything and you have to be very careful what you tell it to remove.
the program that was available (it still is at one site, but not at the site given) should only be used by advanced users as if you make changes to your registry willy nilly, you can disable your own system and make it unusable, LifeChoices NEEDS to check these things out before listing them as a user that is not proficient in PC’s can destroy their OS and lose anything and everything that exists on their system, your IT guys need a kick in the pants
That is a valid point Laserboy* One wrong click and you could be in trouble. Not all people who use a computer are ‘Computer Savvy ( me for one) Cheers >>
I would also suggest you make a very quick retraction of the email so no-one gets caught making changes to the system, as in any court of law you have left yourself open to being sued, by giving the wrong information without checking your facts
I concur with lasaboy’s request
Me too! Now I’m running scared!
Download and start using Linux Ubuntu. I did about 5 years ago and haven’t had a virus yet. It seems that only Windows has this vulnerability to things going wrong.
I would but I run a number of online programs that will not run or do weird and wonderful things running under Linux
Probably got a Window virus!
I don’t get viruses, I have state of the art protection on a number of levels as I have been into PC’s since the 70’s, when we had to build our own
