Which external hard drive should I buy?

YOURLifeChoices subscriber, Terri, is keen to back up his treasured photos and important documents but would like Webmaster, Drew, to give some guidance on which sized external hard drive to purchase.

Q. Terri
Hi Drew, could you help me please? I want to buy an external hard drive to store my files, documents and photos. I see there are 2.5 and 3.5 ones which are best and what is the difference?

A. Hi Terri, Drew here.

A very good question!

As you can tell by looking around, a 2.5″ external hard drive is more expensive than a 3.5″. There is a large difference between the two with a 2.5″ being smaller, weighing less and being more compact than its 3.5″ counterpart. They both do exactly the same thing apart from the 3.5″ requiring an external power supply to plug into while your 2.5″ can be powered via your computer’s USB port.

If you do a lot of travelling and plan on taking the hard drive with you, I would recommend the 2.5″ for the extra cost, otherwise the 3.5″ will save you a good $20-30 minimum depending on the space size you require.

Kind Regards,
Drew Patchell
