Australian tourism offices have some of the best advertisements and promotions in the world. We’re well known for our innovative, often irreverent marketing of our great cities and the country as a whole.
From Hoges’s famous ‘throw another shrimp on the barby’ campaign, to the now infamous ‘CU in the NT’ crusade, we Aussies attack tourism marketing with a sense of humour and fun.
Recently, the gangs at City of Melbourne and City of Sydney took off the gloves and started a Twitter war – and the results were hilarious.
Even if you only know one Melburnian, chances are, you know that their hometown was just named World’s Most Liveable City for the seventh time.
Understandably, City of Melbourne was very happy with this outstanding accomplishment.
Sydney, which fell out of the top 10 to 11th most liveable city, decided that Melbourne’s boast was a touch too smug. So, it sent them congratulations, along with a Spotify playlist as a ‘gift’. Take careful note of the song titles …
City of Melbourne took the jab, but City of Sydney let its guard down and walked into what could only be described as a knockout blow. Or as Broadsheet put it: the ‘equivalent of pointing to the scoreboard’.
Well, I suppose the best city won that argument!
