Islamic museum educating visitors by dispelling religion's myths

A story about a museum in Melburne's north that gives some people a much different picture of Islam than the one they currently have.

"It means diversity, it means education, it means learning — it means seeing people walk [in] with one perception and walk out with a whole new one"

.....  Australia is a democratic and free country - right?  Can I walk into an Islamic Mosque at any time of day? Doubt it?  Be an interesting exercise - right??

Well, perhaps, but the Anglican Church near me is locked most of the time. You never know what those secretive Christians are planning in the darkened rooms out the back.

Look, obviously the people running this museum are trying to make things as open as they possibly can. I sugeest you accept their goodwill at face value and look for the positives in this.

hey - I think it is probably a good idea (or is it?)  - but - do you know what they can possibly display or have in a " Muslim/Islamic" Museum? Especially in Melbourne.

Few "heads on sticks" maybe? Old redundant Prayer Books? Old useless coins? Pictures of emaciated women?  What?

...oh and before you get stuck into me Barak - I am Atheist - so doesn't bother me either way!  :-)

I think all Religions are totally disgusting - and - if we never had Religion - maybe there would be PEACE throughout the world????  Nice thought!  Eh?   :-)

Hey Foxy,   If you wear your Hijab, nobody will know how foxy you are.

I fully agree with your final sentence.

Your assumptions do seem a bit extreme.

But what's with the line "Especially in Melbourne"?

Hmmmmm ... you got me on that one?  No idea why I actually said that to be honest?

.... was probably just wondering why they chose Melbourne? You surely have enough humour to see I was "joking" in paragraph Two?   :-)

Yup.

Most Churches you will find are locked during the day. It's to prevent vandals from coming in and wrecking the place. Catholic Churches were always open until they had break-ins by the low-lifes who used to steal money from the poor boxes . One Cathederal near my home was always open until someone came in and set fire to it, it was totally destroyed and took many years to restore . I visited the Jewish Museum when I was in Melbourne. It is really an eye opener. Some survivors from them were on hand to answer your questions. It brought me to tears seeing the photographs of the prisoners, little children, old people and the like and it's makes you wonder how those German soldiers could go home to their families and carry on as if nothing had happened. If you saw the movie "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas", you would know what I was talking about. Man's inhumanity to man, it's got me puzzled.

..... that movie was amazing!  I have seen it twice!

The book (and the movie) are used in schools in Victoria a fair bit now. Obviously a good thing.

A museum is there for public access while a mosque or church is there for worship by followers of the creed. I might be curious about what a synagogue or mosque looks like inside but would not feel comfortable going for a sticky beak. If I go to a RSL I have to sign in as a visitor.

A museum is for education and display, public.

My husband years ago walked into the Gallipoli Mosque in Lidcombe, NSW and asked if he could have a look around, they were only too pleased to show him . He said it was huge inside with beautiful stained glass windows and a massive chandelier in the centre. Persian carpets were all over the ground for prayers. The women were not allowed to sit in the main hall and had to sit at the back in a different section, he didn't ask about it, he believed men and women are equal and should be able to mix together.. but that is a different subject, one that he didn't want to get into. My son played in a Brass Quintet in the Jewish Church in Sydney and had to wear the little skull cap before he entered. He was very impressed with the place.

It sounds like a great enterprise Barak. Direct education is the way forward to deeper understanding and unity. I wonder though if diehard bigots want to be educated? Seems to me they like to hate chosen others who they deem inferior.

No, they don't want to be educated. Wilful ignorance and hatred are alive and well.

I find it healthier to find the good in everyone, and not deem whole groups of people evil because of the sins of a few alleged members of those groups.

It looks a fascinating Museum Barak, next time I go East I am planning to revisit Melbourne, what is public transport like to Thornbury? Do the trams go out that far? I really only know the Central part of Melbourne from the brief time I lived there.

Thornbury tram timetable can be obtained at above Viv. Its not that far from Melbourne CBD, 7 km.

Thanks Geoff, I love the West but so often there are so many more Exhibitions and more  variety of museums and Art Galleries in the Eastern States I always need to do a bit of advance planning to see anything.

You can get a fair bit of info from the museum's website - https://www.islamicmuseum.org.au/

have you noticed that it is the infidel that must change to placate the believer - in England now the history books are changed because some items offend them.

Here we  spend millions to stop children of that belief being "radicalised" by their leaders and now it is believed that we should spend much more .

whom are our military in combat  with overseas and whom are we spending millions of dollars here to watch lest we are attacked

take a little time and read the holy book and see just where you stand unless you are a muslim or unwilling to learn just what they think of all infideles -

peter

All main religions have text that I find bizarre by todays standards and barnaric stories. They all tend to preach peace and love as well. I can and have in the past shown equal brutal text from the bible or koran.

Apparently you seem to think all of one faith are like robots that have exactly the same mind set. If I carried your ? mindset to the Exclusive Brethren then they are the same as a Baptist or catholic. Wasn,t it a born again christian who illegally imvaded Iraq based on lies that kicked off millions of muslim people to be killed ? A law has finally come into operation in Victoria to stop christians harrassing women attending an abortion clinic. Harrassing is a polite word for their vile actions which also included the firearm death of a guard.

How much did we spend on the Iraq invasion Peter ? How much do we spend on religious only chaplains in schools ? How much misery revealed and money are we spending on child abuse by christian organisations ? You may wish to ponder why religions are tax free enterprises or exactly why mobs such as the IPA also have similar tax status. I was stunned when I found out about the IPA.

People tend to want the same things for themselves and their kids no matter what their belief/creed. How many variations are there in sects and branches of the same brand of religions be it christian, Islam or Jewish ?
