First in best dressed..

My hubby and I often go fishing, and yesterday reminded me of something as we were sitting in the sun ,feeling the warmth on our bodies ,listening to the silence, watching the waves lapping on the shoreline and not a care in the world.

After a few hours the sun was going down so we walked over to cleaning trough and scaled and cleaned our catch..dropping the heads and frames back into the water..

Holy catfish, It was like aircraft landing all around us , a scurry of beaks, feet and feathers ,squarking and scrapping...and the thought?...

I wouldn't be a moderator on this site for quids...or should that be squids?...!  LOLOL

Ha ha ha Love your sence of humor Cranky Re: Holey catfish. You go fishing and actually catch Fish, man I'd love to know where you go lol I love Fishing, I used to do Surf fishing but that was years ago now days I am unable to even cast from the pier Aw well thank god for fish shops

Yes we have the same thing here the Pelicans are always waiting

:) Cranky and Stewie.

I grabbed a 'seafood basket' takeaway yesterday. It would have to be the WORST seafood I've ever encountered. Just amazingly unrecognisable either by sight, smell or taste. Never again for that outlet.

I envy those who have a fresh catch.

My hubbie and I fished for many years and love the pelican/seagull scramble that goes on near fish-cleaning tables and boat ramps.

RnR most of the seafood you buy at the fish shop already cooked is from imported rubbish as they buy the cheapest and do not have to label where it is from or what fish it even is --- no way I will buy it anymore.   I could have come from the filthy Mekong and probably did.

Agree PlanB ... seafood cheats rule ... but the concoction I got yesterday from whatever source it came from was beyond the pale.

I know, even I can crap cook fresh seafood, but this was like it was from another taste planet. Strange stuff indeed.

I am afraid I would have taken it back and let them know what crap it was and that you will be not coming back and will be informing everyone you know

RnR there's a pretty good chance what you had wasnt fish of any sort as PlanB indicated god only knows what was in it  sorry dont meant to make you sick

I get beautiful fresh snapper in Denmakr (WA)....best I have ever eaten.  Also if anyone is going to Busselton there is a fish and chip shop there which is just as good...all fresh fish.

:) Sounds like it's worth a plane ticket Radish.

I can vouch for Denmark....not only beautiful seafood but fantastic scenery...we have a cottage not far from Denmark Radish.

Is it the      Madfish and Chips  -- in Denmark?

We recently had a week there with our Probus Club but had a night in Albany before moving to our rented chalet just outside  Denmark.

The fish and chip shop I refer to is on the right just after you go through the roundabout on the way to the centre of town.  Cannot think of the name of it but it was packed with customers but the service was first class.  Very efficient staff.

Radish Did you go to the Honey and Mead Place outside Denmark? great honey, Mead Wine  and Mead Brandy makes a great gift when you want something different.

fishing has been banned here in port phillip bay.   man next door used to fish,  and would give me a lovely snapper,  or whatever he caught,   different taste all together than what you buy in the shops,  THAT BASA that they sell,   wouldnt even give it to my cat,  [if i had one,]   it is foul,

Cats..We had a lovely elderly neighbour that used to take his boat out and deliver me 4 kgs of fresh filleted whiting every week , and charged me a ridiculous amount for all that effort..and in turn I would cook him a few treats ..

Sadly he passed away and its all a memory now as the fish that I purchase now leaves a lot to be desired.

Fresh is best certainly rings true with seafood...

whiting is just so nice,  and so tasty --I love the sand whiting -- and that is a summer fish --  I did catch some Coral Trout years ago up near the reef and it was just wonderful -- Fresh Barra is great too as  is Flying fish which used to land on our boat many times --so very sweet.

Flying fish? Wow that's a new one for me...I would be stoked if any sort of fish landed in my boat without having to stand for hours praying for bites....lol..

No, Viv, did not know about it to be honest.  We were pretty full on with things to do while we were there but will make a note to go there next time we go down there on our own.  Thanks for the heads p :)

The latest news is about a young teenager who went fishing using a drone.

He hovered the drone above a school of fish, dropped his line in from the drone and caught a 20kg salmon.

What ingenuity!! LOL

Where does he live...I'll visit!  lol

The best feed of fish that I haven't caught myself was on a trip to NewZealand whilst travelling ...A nice big colourful Mauri guy recommended it to me..

It was "HOKI" , I took it back to the motorhome , crumbed it and cooked it..It barely had room to move in the pan it was so big...

It was the most exquisite piece of fish I have ever had ,large white flakes that melted in my mouth..and even though I have tried Hoki in every fish and chip shop within cooey I have never come close to that experience...

I probably never will.

The best seafood I've ever eaten, in order:

Teraglin fresh caught off Terrigal, NSW.

• Warm prawns off a trawler, Fraser Island, QLD.

• Salmon fresh caught off Cardwell, QLD.

• Barra fresh caught, cooked at Mt Lewis, Cairns QLD.

• Barra fresh caught, True North, Kimberley WA.

• Lobster Mornay at Hervey Bay Boat Club.

My late hubbie loved fishing and fishing places and he was a mega-maniac regarding the source and quaility of cooked seafood, with great contacts re the fresh stuff. I just used to follow his lead with delightful taste results.

Think next time I desire it, I'll visit the good ol fish 'n chip shops in Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads. They are grass-roots stuff and hopefully will live up to the delights of Denmark and others interstate.

I have to agree with the seafood on Kennedy Drive, Tweed heads R&R..if its the same one I am thinking of..It was a while ago...We sat outside on the deck under the stars and enjoyed every mouthful..

A good fish and chip shop is like a good hairdresser...

You will always return ...

BAD FOOD....  This is sickening - and dangerous!!!This was shown on ??60 Minutes?? a few weeks ago.  Disgusting !'Starkist' Tuna is now owned by Korea, and is in big conflict with the U.S. concerning quality, safety, and records - which Korea refuses to provide.

There have been several articles on Google about this, and even one that was defending the eating of tilapia said to avoid the fish that came from China.  Also, I had just returned home from buying Albertson's 4-day special of 4 bags of frozen tilapia for the price of one.  Sure enough, on the top of the bags, it read "farm raised", and on the bottom in small print it said, "China ".

Recently, a Food inspector on TV, said he had lived overseas and he had seen the filthy conditions their foods are raised and processed in.  It is enough to make you violently ill.  Some foreign workers have to wear masks as they work in these places, because the food is so rotten and filthy, it makes them want to throw up.  Many of their fish on Fish Farms are fed RAW SEWAGE daily.  He said he has seen so much filth throughout their food growing and processing that he would "never" eat any of it.  They raise this filth, put some food colouring and some flavourings on it, then they ship it to the USA  Canada & Australia for YOU to consume and feed to YOUR families.  They have no Food & Safety Inspectors. They ship it to you to buy and poison your families and friends... they don't care!

Imported food we eat and the junk we buy:-
Green Giant frozen vegetables are from China, and so are most of Europe's Best.Arctic Gardens are Okay. So is Birdseye - (but check the label). Most frozen vegetables from New Zealand are actually produced in China.

Never buy the grocery store garlic unless it is clearly marked from USA, Canada, or Australia; the other stuff is grown in people poop (even worse than chicken poop).
China is the largest producer of garlic in the world, U.S. is next.

Buy only local honey - much honey is shipped in huge containers from China and re-packed here.

Cold-FX is grown and packed in China and is full of fecal bacteria.  Doesn't work anyway, big scam.
If the country of origin is not clearly marked, beware. If produce, ask an employee... but they probably can't tell you.

Watch out for packages which state "prepared for", "packed by", or "imported by".  I don't understand the lack of mandatory labelling, especially the produce.

The country of origin should be clearly shown on the item in the store.  I go to the local farmers' markets in season and keep a wary eye open the rest of the year.

Please read this very carefully, and read to the very bottom.  It's important for all of us.

How is it possible to ship food from China cheaper than having it produced in the U.S., Canada, or Australia?

Beware, Costco sells canned peaches and pears in a plastic jar that come from China. Aldi's asparagus is from China too.

ALL "HIGH LINER" AND MOST OTHER FROZEN FISH PRODUCTS COME FROM CHINA OR INDONESIA. THE PACKAGE MAY SAY "PACIFIC SALMON" ON THE FRONT, BUT LOOK FOR THE SMALL PRINT.  MOST OF THESE PRODUCTS COME FROM FISH FARMS IN THE ORIENT WHERE THERE ARE NO REGULATIONS ON WHAT IS FED TO THESE FISH.

Recently, an article by the Canadian Government told how Chinese feed the fish: They suspend chicken wire crates over the fish ponds, and the fish feed on chicken s--t.  If you search the internet about what the Chinese feed their fish, you'll be alarmed; e.g., growth hormones, expired anti-biotics from humans.  Never buy any type of fish or shellfish that comes from these countries:- Vietnam, China, or the Philippines.

Check this out personally.  I did.  Steinfeld's Pickles are made in India - just as bad!

Another example is in canned mushrooms.  'No-Name' brand came from Indonesia.
While the Chinese export inferior and even toxic products, dangerous toys, and goods to be sold in overseas markets, the media wrings its hands!

Yet, 70% of North Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended!

Well, duh! Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges?
SIMPLY DO IT YOURSELF, AUSTRALIA, CANADA AND THE U.S.!Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong), simply choose another product, or none at all.  You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.

THINK ABOUT THIS:

If 200 million consumers refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favour... fast!  The downside?  Some businesses will feel a temporary pinch from having foreign stockpiles of inventory.

Just one month of trading losses will hit the Chinese for 8% of their exports.  Then they will at least have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness are worth it.

START NOW - and don't stop.

I notice that Aldi products have bar codes but NO numbers and I rung them and the girl had no idea what I was talking about and said there was no one she could put me onto,  I wonder WHY not numbers on the bare codes

Aldi pay Halal extorsion ... so need to make up their profit somehow.

Crikey PlanB...

I was eating a custard tart before reading all that, I might save it for later..

Thankgoodness I made it myself..

it seems we have lost track of what we eat and where it comes from.... :(

PlanB...I want to know what "Flying fish" tastes like...I am now intrigued... :)

Cranky it is a very sweet fish and has a wonderful flavour , it is so long since I have had it I think some also call it Latchet.

As I said it was a long time -- many decades --- ago but I think it was a lot like the Sand Whiting

If anyone will be visiting Sydney in the near future you must go to Doyle's Seafood at Watson's Bay. They serve the best seafood in Sydney. They have a Takeaway and another one on the Pier which is a Restaurant.

Must agree

In my heyday used to frequent on many a occasion ... goood to hear it is still as good.

Yes have to agree with Doyles great sea food there, may have a VERY long wait.
