What would you do if you found $4.6 million in your bank account?

A major glitch in Westpac's banking system saw almost $5 million transfered into a Sydney teenager's bank account. Can you guess what she did next?

Yep, she spent it. $3.3 million to be precise. She claims she bought luxury handbags with it, amongst other things. That's a lot of designer handbags ...

Anyway, this happened three or four years ago, and the woman in question is now 21 years old. She was finally arrested last night trying to escape to Malaysia. Somehow, she'd managed to spend this $3.3 million during this time. How this has happened kind of eludes me, to be honest, but it does make for a juicy conversation starter.

What would you do if you found that much money in your bank account? I mean, the first thing you would do? Let's imagine there was a chance you could actually get away with it. Now what would you do? I tell you what, I'd have a really difficult time not spending it, but I think I'd come clean. Maybe there'd be a reward, but for some reason, I doubt it.

Now it the roles were reversed and I somehow misplaced $3.3 million dollars into a bank's account, I bet it wouldn't return the money. What do you think?

I would never exchange a clean conscience for a guilty one and the fear that goes with it. No amount of money would be worth it.

RE :

Interesting when an unexpected deposit goes in and you use it, it's classed as illegal transaction.

When there is a unexpected withdrawal or misplaced transaction it's a mistake, but please prove your loss. Not a word about illegal activity.

Many trips later and phone calls, you may get your money back with so sorry.

Yes I agree with you Chris

There seems to be a different law about unexpected money going into your account to that unexpected money being taken out of your account

Unexpected withdrawal can be done by Law which Gillard introduced
ie. if accountis not active for 3 years it gets deposited with ASIC .... it also includes unclaimed checques

.. then you have to fill in forms and prove who you are and that it is your money to get it back.

Might be worth your while to run your name through Asic's moneysmart unclaimed money
... click on link below or put it into your browser... just in case the Govt is hanging onto some of your money :)

I class myself as an honest person, but at my age &if someone put a few million in my account I think I may have a go at having agood time.I may end up in gaol no pension but free lodgings .

...lol - yeah - here for a "good time" - NOT a "long time" - !!!   :-)

i would be very tempted to spend a little of it,   even though i know i would be caught out in the end,    have a good time for awhile,     when caught,    claim you are demented,   or something similar,   seems people get off with the flimsiest excuses,   id give it a try,  lol, lol,

.....go Cats - least you'd have a bit of fun - for awhile! lol lol lol

No way would I keep it.   Many years ago I drew some money -- $200 -- out of the then NSW building Society I was in a hurry and never checked, until I got where I was going and when I went to put away, I had been given $2000,   I took it straight back and I was not even thanked.

However I would still give ANY back that was NOT mine.

i would only take a little bit, ,   my needs are very frugal,     just enough so id only get about a month,    i could have a good rest,   and think about the fun i had,   if only for a few days, lol, lol,

You know your getting old when you have to ask;

did it really take 3 or 4 years for this error to be detected.

Q: What would you do if $3.3 mil was deposited and not queried for such a period.

I would at least want the interest for renting my bank account (lol)

Yep I agree there's rules for there mistakes and rules for our mistakes.

When my son was an apprentice he worked in a retirement village, and when someone dies or is moved into a nursing home, the tradies come in and give the room a new fit-out., everything is taken out and all new carpets etc. are installed. One day he rang me to say he had taken all this old newspaper off the shelves in the kitchen and there to his surprise he found hundreds of notes in every denomination, it totalled $1200.00 in all. I told him to take it immediately to the head office and give it in, ask for a receipt and wait to see if the family thanked him, nobody came forward. It just goes to show how people take you for granted when you show a little courtesy. I told him he would never have any luck if he had kept the money.

You and your Son did the right thing, I bet it was the Nursing home that didn't.

Shame that he couldn't find out who the person was that had lived there and contact the family.

Plan B -- I don't think Nursing Homes would give out private information about patients families. I was told that this goes on quite a bit, poor old people hide their money for a rainy day and not tell the family. Another tradie took up a carpet from one room and found a lot of notes, he gave it to the foreman, and never heard another word of gratitude, foreman probably pocketed it, who knows?

Awful to think that people do such things but I know they do.

We owned cabs back in the 70's and it was our kids job to clean out them out nightly to earn pocket money.

My daughter found a cloth bank bag containing $3000 dollars and brought it in for dad..

My poor husband had the job of going through every fare that had been in that particular car that day and literally sat guard on the bag all night..in the morning he managed to trace the owner to a large firm in the city and took time off to return it..

"Here mate , go buy yourself a drink..most appreciated"...and the owner handed him $5 dollars for his trouble..It wouldn't even have covered the cost of the petrol ..

My hubby gave the money to my daughter ..her normal weekly amount for her hard work..
