Rio Olympics and Zika Virus

I have thought all along that our athletes should not be going to Rio due to the Zika virus and I see that an "open letters" has now been signed by 100 experts and scientists re the Olympics and the dangers of this virus spreading.

There is no way would I even contemplate going to watch.  What price a gold medal?

The Games are over.

I have not heard of a single person who is now sick with the Zika virus becasue they went to the Games.

This whole story was as serious as SARS.

Told you so.

Also Barak I would think that the spraying that was happening might have been more serious than the Mossies

Yes agree Plan B that spraying would have done little for people's health

However Zika virus is being found in areas and are not restricted to travel to Brazil ... apparently can be also transmitted by kissing and sex.

Furthermore in latest research Scientists have found that Zika can spark brain damage similar to dementia so potentillay not just danger to pregnant women,

Lets hope they find a vacinne for it soon, seeing they do not quarantine people travelling to affected areas and not even fumigating them on the plane ..

I'd like to see that research.

Too much sensatialised "research" led to the bullshit over Rio.

You may like to Google

Zika can spark brain damage similar to dementia

and in regards to your other doubt of Zika causing brain damage in unborn babies

intracranial calcifications linked to Zika

You stand a better chance of getting Histoplasmosis from cleaning chicken pens than the  Zika virus.

Abby, it's people drawing ridiculous conclusions from narrow research that led to the unnecessary scare in the first place.

I'll believe there's a real danger from the disease when I see it reported AND confirmed in the Lancet or the Australian Medical Journal.

In that case Google

Lancet or the Australian Medical Journal Zika

Wonder why on Feb 1, 2016 - The World Health Organisation has declared the mosquito-borne Zika virus to be an international public health emergency

I agree Abby Zika is not good and a real worry

But we keep seeing warnings, and nobody died of Zika by going to Rio.

We were warned about SARS, and swine flu, and bird flu, and a host of other coming pandemics. What hapened? Fizzers, all of them.

Why should I be worried about these warnings?

Re read the rubbish you have just written Barak. People have died of Sars, swine flu and bird flu. It is because of "warnings" that pandemics were averted. It is because of the precautions and warnings no one died by going to Rio.

I accept all of these warnings but it's the scare mongering I have no time for. Take the necessary advice and people will be fine.

OK, let's have sensible warnings, but not scaremongering. Can I be the judge?

RE; Can I be the judge?

You have to be kidding

So who is?

Rupert Murdoch?

Zika virus: Five new cases discovered at Miami Beach

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-08-20/zika-virus:-five-new-cases-found-at-miami-beach/7768818

Singapore has reported its first locally-transmitted case of the Zika virus, with three other suspect infections pending confirmation.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-08-28/singapore-reports-first-locally-transmitted-zika-case/7792036

I suspect road accidents, and random shootings for Miami, are still a much greater concern in both those places.

Had not heard about the locally transmitted cases of Zika Virus in Singapore

Thanks for the link Sandi :)
