Are you sure you're not supporting big business?

This graphic from Oxfam International shows the brands which are owned by 10 of the world's largest food producing companies.

It's strange to see how many of these brands, some of which even seem to be in direct competition with each other, are owned by just 10 companies.

Oxfam's 'Behind the Brands' website keeps track of how these companies score on the following issues:

  • land rights, particularly in low-income countries
  • equal treatment, pay and rights for women
  • fair pay for farmers
  • safe working conditions and rights for workers
  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • transparency e.g. where they source their products and under what conditions
  • management of water, particularly in areas where water is in short supply.

Each company's score card is updated every year to show any steps forward (or backward) that they have made in these areas.

Do you support any of these big companies? Will reading over their scorecards influence your choices?
