The Same Sex Marriage Plebiscite

"A plebiscite on same-sex marriage is looking less likely, with the Federal Opposition determined to have a parliamentary vote to change marriage laws instead."

This plebiscite will cost $160 million. That means every Australian will pay $7.50 for it to happen.

It's non-binding on politicians. That means that politicians with fixed views on the matter can still vote however they like. There is no guarantee that the public will get what it wants, no matter what the result of the plebiscite is.

Campaigning for a "NO" on such a plebiscite will be an opportunity for those who  hate the idea of gay marriage to tell gay people they are lesser humans, and to tell the children of such people that their parents are incapable of being good parents. It will lead to higher levels of depression among such people, and possible suicides.

It really is a pointless, expensive exercise, unless the point is to delay or avoid same-sex marriage entirely.

There are legitimate concerns over having the Safe Schools program in classrooms, and simply attacking those who question it isn't helping anyone, writes Kevin Donnelly.

In response to the Commonwealth Government's decision to hold an inquiry into the Safe Schools Coalition program, ALP Leader Bill Shorten labelled one of the program's main critics, Senator Cory Bernardi, a "homophobe".

And after William Louden's report on the LGBTQI program was released and Minister Simon Birmingham responded, a number of critics attacked the Commonwealth Government for bowing to conservative Christians both inside and outside parliament.

Green's Senator Robert Simms argues it is "clear that Malcolm Turnbull has thrown LGBTI young people under the bus today by bowing to the right-wing backbench bullies and stripping back the Safe Schools program."

Writing for The Conversation website, Swinburne University's Lucy Nicholas describes the members of parliament critical of the Safe School program as "white, cisgender, heterosexual male politicians" and the argues the proposed changes will lead to a situation where bullying LGBTQI students "is normalised".

Judging by the reaction to the proposed changes to the Safe Schools program one could be forgiven for believing that it is no longer available to schools. In fact, the opposite is the case as all schools will be able to access the program and its official website and in Victoria the state government has signalled the program could be mandatory for government secondary schools.

While it is the case that the Commonwealth Government has recommended that the Safe Schools Coalition website be restricted to only hosting officially approved material, thus denying access to third party LGBTQI organisations and materials, given the nature of the internet, there is nothing to stop schools, teachers, and students, for that matter, accessing what might be considered controversial sites like Minus 18 that advocate a LGBTQI sexual and gender agenda.

Critics of the recent changes, like Lucy Nicholas, argue it is wrong to require parental approval before schools implement the program.

Ignored is the reality that parents are their children's first teachers and that the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights argues that parents are primarily responsible for their children's moral education
