Really? - nah just kiddin.

Research commissioned by the Australian Institute of Superannuation found 80% of retired households reported expenditure levels considered to be the most basic of living standards for retirees: ~ $24K for singles & ~ $43.5K for couples. Presuming of-course that this research also encompassed self funded retirees, either partly or fully, then wouldn't this suggest that married couples, having stuck to it through thick and thin, wouldn't now be well advised to seperate ?

Although maths isn't my strong point, I'd suggest the couples are considerably worse off. Considering present pension rates in the order of ~ $23K for singles & ~ $34K /couple p.a, then maybe it IS time for we few remaining silly old married farts to seperate, get hip and cashed up with the current wave of trendies. Recently; as we seemingly failed to convey the message via the poll, what better means of registering dissatisfaction than hitting the Public purse where it most hurts - the Treasurers coffers ! Bill & his sidekick can then exchange blow for blow with Mal & his sidekick - below the benches if you please: we've already witnessed more than enough cross bench expression of public invective.

I would go as far as to say that there are probably couples out there who have done just that, if I were maried to a woman other than the one I am now I would suggest we sell up divorce and rent a house as shared accommodation.  As far as I can tell this would not preclude us both getting a single pension and rent assistance.

Fortunatley my wife is a much more moral person than myself and would be astounded if I even brought the subject up.  She thinks I am much nicer than I actually am.

Thanks ex PS, I can identify totally with your comment, my wife, like yours is by far the better bet in our long relationship and has positively effected a good deal to my outlook & considerations. One would only hope that their faith (blind or otherwise) is not misguided. It seems to me that far too many in todays society are hellbent on chasing elusive rainbow ends (& the imagined pot o gold). In so doing they've probably overlooked golden opportunities that may have passed them bye.

PS that is hilarious, I agree completely.

People of our generation have for the most part been taught to suffer in silence, to pick a political party (normally the one Dad supported) and vote for them till the day you die.

We all need to take a step back and get a bit selfish.  Take a look at the political organisations that are looking for votes and pick the one that will give us the best options.  Try and forget old party allegiances and make a logical, informed decision, a decision based on fact and actions not party propaganda.

It may be that neither of the so called major political organisations fit the bill.

Sadly in my time on the Forum

I have seen two different members try to form a Senior party which would give us a voice in the Parliament

but both failed as it seems most Seniors are too rusted on to the party which they voted for years.

Unfortunately all the Political Parties currently in Government are aware of this,

hence we have no say in the Senior's policies

... and can only grumble as we get discriminated against more and more.

Most seniors I know Abby just could not be bothered with politics...in the social club I belong to there is only one person who, from time to time, discusses politics with me (the club has 150 members).

It would appear most are more interested in their retirement, travelling, socialising etc and have put work and politics behind them in their senior years.

A seniors party will never, in my opinion, get off the ground.

I'll put my hand up to be one of those non political seniors Pepe.

Why live your life being disgruntled, getting into heated discussions and hating people simply because of their political views.?

I'd rather grab a rod , find a lovely spot under a tree. and go fishing...with the great guy i married for richer or poorer..

It's the being rusted on that's the problem. As others here have admitted, they don't want to even think about politics. That means the pollies will take them for granted.

At a time in their lives when they do have the time to contribute, they have become political vegetables and do nothing.

Those who think the older generation are a waste of space may be on to something.

Good for them...but I have spent a lifetime in the public eye, and have given a huge contribution to the country I adopted as my own...

I now leave the political stuff to people who have the inclination...

As for being a waste of space.......

Wish you were here... not.....lolol...

Cranky -  When we came to this wonderful country, my parents never asked for hand-outs or felt sorry for the circumstances we were forced to live in. They just got on with it. I have done my fair share , volunteering and doing my bit to make life a little easier. Why would I want to contribute my time to political parties, that's why we voted them in, for them to make our lives a little easier in our later years. We've only got a certain time left and to waste it complaining about what life has handed out to us, is a total waste of time.

Exactly Hola. Of all the countries in the world I believe seniors in Australia,  are, in the main, well looked after.

Pepe - I'll Second the Motion.  Hear, Hear.

And I third it..not only do we have the best of most things, we also have great weather and the time to Persue the many pastimes and recreational activities we couldn't do whilst working..

I have no intention of wasting my days on what we can't change..

If people never change their votes, things won't change.

Good point Barak, Now all you good labourites go out there and vote for the LNP sit back and enjoy..............................Just kidden Barak just kidden lol

Pepe

That used to be the case but not anymore ... the welfare benefits have much further to stretch with less people working.

...and the rich bastards not paying any tax.

Its not my vote I wont change Barak...Its my mind..

It's made up and and until people become more contented with what they have rather than what they think they should be entitled to , become more generous of spirit and less greedy for the almighty dollar, no party will make a difference as they are all clones of each other with a different name and different faces..

No thanks...

It's all yours.....

And that's why politicians ignore the needs of older folk.
