Electric cars

This is an interesting article about electric cars - the car of the future.  But I think there is a big problem – it’s not a matter of pulling into a servo, filling up and you are on your way within minutes, it seems to take hours to recharge.  Surely this isn’t going to work for most people?

As soon as the first Tesla electric vehicles arrived in Australia the road trips began. Tesla owners travelled up the east coast to Cairns and beyond. Others set off south for a tour of Tasmania. In late 2015, “Mystery Steve” upped the ante by driving his brand new Model S from Sydney back to Perth, sleeping in a tent overnight whilst the car was charging.

We have a recharge facility for two car spaces in my shopping centre.  So far I haven't seen one car in them but eventually they will be taken and then what?

This morning on SBS I saw that in Singapore they are trialing driveless electric taxi cars

One possible solution to the recharging issue is a replaceable battery pack.

The batteries would be under the floor (good for weight disribution) in a module that you would slide out when needed, and get a fully charged one to slide in in its place.

A bit like the swapover gas bottles most servos have now, only this one would be the fuel for your car.

We have a Toyota Camry Hybrid and are very pleased with it.   It's ideal for Sydney traffic, when you come to the lights it kicks over to the batteries and the fuel consumption is great but it has the back-up of a 4 litre engine.  I like your idea Barak but I'm guessing the cost will be the problem.

Yes Toot

With the Hybrid you get the best of both worlds

My Subaru stops the engine when I stop at the lights too, and it's not a hybrid.

You mean it stalls every time you hit the lights?

Um, no.

Barak the thought is there but there is a glich , you have just brought your self a new hybrid and you head off down the road, your batteries are running down so you pull into a service station for a battery change over, sounds good so far, heres the hitch you have just passed on a good set of batteries for a 5+year old set, sounds like you have just lost value in your new car. The theory is good though

Do you exchange gas bottles at all?

No Barak I dont, I have those disposable ones for a single burner, but wouldnt the same apply here you give up a new for a old one?

I guess. But lots of people are happy to excahnge used ones.

Who cares?  Most "Baby Boomers"  will be dead before they ever get to try/own one?

lol lol lol (sorry)

.. just my "sick" humour ...................can't help myself sometimes   :-)

I agree with you Foxy.  LOL

...saw the latest electric "Tesla X" on TV today - starts at $190,000 (basic model)  to $260,000 - amazing car - but the price?  Only for the super rich - good luck with that one!    lol

Oh - and the "blonk" that was spruiking it was asked ........... "what happens if you live in a rich area wth only street parking?  How do you charge it? - lol lol - Got him on that one!  No garage - no safe charge?   :-)

... stupid question maybe - but  ?  There are mega rich places in Melbourne with only "on street" parking .........
