Compromised credit card

Warning to everyone. Our credit card has been compromised..no idea how and bank will not give any information other than to say they have shut down our card/s.

New cards  will be issued in a few days but we now have to ring authorities who do direct debit to give them the new credit card number when we receive it.  This is a pain but at least Mastercard were quick off the mark.

The scammers must be out and about....so be careful everyone...and make sure you cover the keycard (which we always do).  Also was told that companies we have dealt with may have been hacked and their records compromised ... could be a number of ways.

We use special wallets to store our cards so skimmers could not have got the number that way.

At least we have not lost any money but it is inconvenient as we will have to pay cash until we get our replacement card/s.

This happened to me last week Radish, Luckily it was not my main bank account card, but a small one I use for online purchases only.

The bank was on it quick smart and closed down that account, like you I am waiting for a new card and pin, and the inconvenience is a nuisance but at least it is curbing my spending for a week..

Hey Cranky, where do you get these small credit cards? Mine are all the same size.

I make my own in the potting shed down the back, Hawkeye..under the cover of darkness .

It was going to be a one of..but now everybody wants one..lolol..

Yep, that's right Cranks. Can me and my best friend place an order?

I am in WA...wonder if they are hitting this State???   Yes, I agree good that the banks are on the ball.

When I tried to pay a doctor's bill at 2 p.m. today and it failed three times...that was the first inkling something was wrong and when I got home there was a number (no message) but I checked on reverse lookup and it was a bankwest number.   Then I rang the main number (not the one on my phone) and checked if it was a legit call I had missed and found out it was.  Queried that no message had been left and was told no they don't do that.

Just as well I rang them as I wonder if they would have just sent out the cards if I "had not" rung them??

Anyway, it is the inconvenience that is certainly the pain.

I had mine skimmed of $1900 and the bank issued me with a new card -- 3 weeks later  -- those that skimmed it bought things that had to be delivered to an address so they should have been able to find who they were but the security at the bank would not tell me -- just as well I had checked my account b4 I went shopping that day as I would have been out of money in my C/C

I also got all the money replaced by the Bank.

Years ago (long before today's cards that can so easily be skimmed) my debit card was somehow used by someone to charge multiple items in US dollars.  The amounts were all small (e.g. $24.95, $30.50, $18.95, etc), and some of the debits were followed by credits (sometimes the same amount, sometimes slightly different).  I figured someone had used my debit account to order things from an American online store (or stores) which had kept the money for what they could supply and credited the account with items not in stock.  The constantly changing exchange rate would have explained why some credits were slightly different from the debits.

When I saw the items on my bank statement (opened around midnight one Sunday night), I called the after-hours number in a different state and reported what had happened.  I was given a record number and told to go to the local branch the next morning.  When I did so, I heard one of the girls in the bank say to another one, "There's a lot of that happening lately."  (The bank reimbursed me the net $200 to $300 that had been withdrawn by ?)

(A short time after this had happened, I received a letter from the bank advising that in the future statements would be mailed quarterly instead of monthly.  I telephoned the head office which had sent the letter and ensured that this change was NOT made for me.  Why would they want to risk people being scammed for a longer period of time before becoming aware of it?)

Back to my incident.  The following Friday afternoon at a post-work weekly session with some other guys, my husband told them what had happened.  One of the other men had a similar story to share -- his and his wife's cards had expired, and their bank (not the same as my bank) had sent them a letter or phoned them to let them know their new cards were ready to be picked up.  The cards were used before they collected them!

A week or two after that we drove to SE Qld to visit various friends.  We stayed with one family in Brisbane for two or three days, during which we told them our story.  Then we went to the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, etc.  The arrangement was that we would stay with the first family for another two or three days as our last stop before returning to North Qld.  We finished our other visits earlier and rang them to ask if we could come to them one day earlier than planned.  Fine, the husband said.  When we got to their home, the wife (jokingly) told us she had almost said we shouldn't come back.  When I asked why, she told me that after we left their account (with still another bank) had been hacked.

What I don't understand is why, especially when it is obvious from our experience that cards can be misused and the banks have to repay us, those banks allowed the introduction and use of the newer cards that can be skimmed so easily.

I also can not understand WHY the hell these cards are so easy to skim-- this pay wave etc crazy -- I can NOT for the life of me understand WHY the powers that be seem to be making it easier and easier for scamming to happen --- and we have NO choice-- pay wave is on every card now and it must cost the banks a fortune to have to repay us all.

The positive thing about pay wave is that the card never leaves the owner's hand.

I have the ANZ bank app on my phone, and I check my accounts every day.

There are easy ways to keep an eye on these things.

What annoyed me was the 13 minutes I had to wait to get put through to speak to someone about my card.

If my card had been stolen a thief could have had racked up a nice little amount in that time and the bank would have been liable.  Surely it is in the Bank's best interests to ensure that customers do not have to wait "in line" to report a stolen or lost card.  You should have immediate access so a Stop can be put on the card.

I use a Skim Guard card which protects all the credit cards, medicare card and drivers licence in my wallet. It sets up a protective field whenever a skimmer is around attempting to steal the info off my cards. I also have a passport wallet with built in protection.

i've got Skim Guards also Phyl. I bought them for my boys when they were going overseas and now I've got some for myself. I bought them from the TVSN Home Shopping Channel 14. They did a demonstration on how skimmers work. The low lifes, fancy stealing people's hard earned money.

i had about$1,300 stolen from my pension a/c with a credit union.  the thieves had somehow got my visa card number AND password.

i think they may have hacked my computer where i had stupidly filed all my passwords.

so, a reminder to all - keep your passwords safely outside your computer.  i have a small notebook i keep at home.

and after quite a while, i did get my money back from the credit union.

take care all.
