Just eight men own half of the world's wealth

a basket full of money lay next to one that is empty

Capitalism and patriarchy. Ain't it great?

A recent report from oxfam shows that just eight men own half the wealth of the world. Six of them are from the USA, one from Mexico and one from Spain.

Big business and the super-rich are fuelling the inequality crisis by dodging taxes, driving down wages and using their power to influence politics.

Oxfam’s report shows how our broken economies are funnelling wealth to a rich elite at the expense of the poorest in society, the majority of whom are women.

The report outlines how the super-rich use a network of tax havens to avoid paying their fair share of tax and an army of wealth managers to secure returns on their investments that would not be available to ordinary savers.  Contrary to popular belief, many of the super-rich are not ‘self-made’. Oxfam analysis shows over half the world’s billionaires either inherited their wealth or accumulated it through industries which are prone to corruption and cronyism.”

But there are other ways. for example,

The multi-billion Euro company Mondragon, is owned by its 74,000 strong workforce.  All employees receive a decent wage because its pay structure ensures that the highest paid member of staff earns no more than 9 times the amount of the lowest paid.”

I'm one of those 8 men and no, I've not giving you a loan!

Be interesting to see if anyone on here won Lotto how much they would give away????????

...if you lucky enough to win 5th. Div. @ $13.50 - not much? Hahahaaaaa ......

Radish - I would love to win Lotto. There are so many I could help and the best part about it would be, not letting the person know who it was that helped them.

That's lovely of you Hola, I do hope you win it soon, I need a little help to pay my astronomical electricity bill caused by excess air conditioning use this summer..

If you could oblige, I won't have to sell my Aston Martin convertible..:)

Interesting. We chose to give our money to these guys. Just a little bit from everyone. Facebook is even free its just the advertisers who pay.

Bill Gates is working on eradicating Malaria. I don't know what the others do.

Oxfam creams off a percentage of every dollar donated. It is an industry.

There is a system of taxation and foreign aid. If it isn't doing enough then that is what needs to change. You can't just attack the wealthy and steal their money. They employ thousands of people too.

In regards to those countries living in abject poverty - yes, I don't understand why we can't help create an infrastructure for plumbing, sewerage and farming etc. Most times its because we can't get passed their political front door.

Was watching an interesting documentary (Sunday I think it was on ABC) re the Leahy family in PNG.

Documentary maker went back 25 years after .

Here is a small extract from the link I have provided below

"

{BOB CONNOLLY: “Why hasn’t the government helped you? I mean 25 years later, it’s exactly the same as when I left”.

THOMAS THYME: “Yes”.

BOB CONNOLLY: “No water, no electricity, no sealed road, no school or at least, you know, the school they’ve got no money. So what’s happened?”

THOMAS THYME: “That’s a very good question”.

BOB CONNOLLY: “Millions and billions of dollars have come into Papua New Guinea”.

THOMAS THYME: “That’s a very good question”.

That last comment by Thomas Thyme says it all.

Until they can stop corruption at the highest level in PNG nothing will change.

I lived there for a number of years and it saddens me to think that the country has barely progesses since they attained self government in 1975.

Would love to go back but..... "the law and order situation in PNG  continues to pose serious risks to travellers. Violent crime, including armed robbery, carjacking and sexual assault, is common throughout the country, especially in urban areas such as Port Moresby, Lae and Mt Hagen."

I note that Thea was the only member to pick up the outright mistake in this thread.  The 8 richest men on Earth do not even come close to owning half the World's wealth.  They don't even own 1% of the World's wealth.  They actually account for 42% of the World's 50 richest people.  The 5 least poor of the top 50, are all worth over $14Billion.  There are over 1,800 Billionaires in the World as of 2015.  The Billionaires actually have a combined wealth of over $9,000B, so the 8 wealthiest, with a total wealth of $425B only have a wealth equal to 4.9% of the Billionaires wealth alone, let alone the wealth of the World.

I truly hate the obsession with other peoples' money.

Resentment of the very wealthy whilst often looking down upon the less fortunate.

Enough already.

An excellent analysis of the topic on this forum page.

Knowing that the US wealthy have a rich tradition of philanthropy, I looked at two of the wealthiest individuals in the States according to Forbes - Michael Bloomberg and Bill Gates.

Their philanthropic foundations suggest that the same amount of energy given to their businesses is also given to their foundations.
