Is Australia racist?

What’s it like to be the target of a racist verbal attack? Virtual reality (VR) has made it possible for you to experience personally what it would be like to be minding your business, only to become the victim of hate speech on Australian public transport.

To have this eight-minute experience, you just need to download the SBS VR app, for your Apple iOS or Google Android device.

On Sunday night, SBS aired a new documentary, hosted by Ray Martin called Is Australia Racist? It makes for some uncomfortable and illuminating viewing. You can watch it online at SBS on Demand

When I lived and worked in the UK in the late 60's into the 70's I never had a problem getting temporary work.

When people found out I was an Aussie I was always told that we were harder workers than the British. and willing to take on anything.   Yes, it is a generalisaton but that was what said to me.

Radish I can believe that...

When we were in Paris having a meal, my husband was trying to remember his schoolboy French!  LOL  [very funny ]   He tried to explain that his wife had an allergy to Dairy.   Knowing the French use dairy so much the Chef nearly had a pink fit at the word Margarine!!!!   Husband said, do you really want my wife to vomit in your restaurant.  I nearly died. Men!!

So a meal was produced which was dairy free........but and this is the funny thing, they thought we were English  [grin] Oh no came the reply from husband we are Australian!

Everything was ok then!   French do not like the English you see....but it was acceptable to this restaurant to serve Australians.

Later I wanted to find a laundromat  .....but I had no powder as it was back then. So husband once again looked for some unsuspecting victim to talk schoolboy French to.

He went to a florist  [poor florist] After ten minutes of neither side understanding a clue of what was being spoken, I thought this is ridiculous I only wanted a SUPERMARKET......LOL   soon as I said supermarket they understood what I wanted and gave ME   DIRECTIONS!  lol

Is Australia racist?

All countries have elements of racism.
I think the better question is 'How does Australia compare with other countries when it comes to racism?'

The following link shows that there are elements of racism in all countries.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Racism_by_country

We have federal legislation that outlaws racism such as the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986.  Also states and territories have their own legislation.  For example, Victoria has the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001.

Australia is a multi-cultural country.  I think that Australia's level of racism is very low compared to most countries around the world.

If Australia is so racist, why have, and why are there still so many people from many countries of different ethnicity/colour/religion etc wanting to come here?

"If Australia is so racist, why have, and why are there still so many people from many countries of different ethnicity/colour/religion etc wanting to come here?"

A very good question.  Is a pity there are elements who want to use up all the "good " parts of what this country offers (our excellent schooling/ welfare/health system) and then want to change the bits they don't like to the way of life they had back in their country of origin.

You come to this country YOU adapt to our way of life;  not the other way around.

Australians in the main are very accepting but once this type of behaviour starts that is when the shackles come up!

Radish very true.....I think we are too accommodating.

Episodes like this don't help ...

Yesterday, Chinese woman subjected to ‘severe racial attack’ in Burwood, Sydney.

Another bogan nutter.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour.  If I had been there I would have stepped in...no question.

Most probably somebody high on drugs or alcohol

Them are fighting words Radish avatar

You worry me with those boxing gloves

Nah, Australia's not racist, we've been here for five generations and no one's ever bothered me.

Probably 'cause you live under a rock? lol lol lol

... that is in response to your extremely "nasty" post to me a couple days ago - ok?   So don't get all "high and mighty"  with me!  - You deserve it!!!
