Government orders ACCC to investigate retail electricity prices

The Government has ordered the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to investigate retail electricity prices.

“Electricity prices have nearly doubled on top of inflation in most parts of Australia over the last decade based on a variety of different factors. It will be important to understand and examine these different factors in each state and territory,” said ACCC Chairman Rod Sims.

“The ACCC is also keen to look at the structure of the retail industry, the nature of competition, the representation of prices to consumers and other factors influencing the price paid by Australians for electricity.

“We enter this inquiry with an open mind and look forward to developing recommendations which can make a difference for Australian households and businesses.”

A preliminary report is expected by the end of September 2017, with a final report due in 30 June 2018.

Why in the name of heaven is the Govt giving Adani 1Billion$ to wreck the reef blight the Queensland tourist economy while mining coal, while screaming not enough money for health and education? Westpac along with most banks have refused to support Adani in recognition it will be money lost, must be big bribes somewhere.

If Turnbull goes ahead with this ridiculous plan, it's his death sentence.  Nobody in their right mind wants this to happen, it's a no brainer.

Who should come first - the consumer or the shareholder?  It's a dilemma I've long pondered but we already know the answer - the shareholders of any company must be kept happy at all costs which means profits must be produced at all costs so it follows that the consumer gets screwed with higher prices for power.  And this is unlikely to change.
