Please read...dont get scammed

Latest warning...if you get a phone call and are asked "can you hear me" DON'T ANSWER...hang up!

SUNSHINE Coast police have issued a warning over an elaborate phone scam that has hit Australia shores after doing the rounds worldwide.

The “can you hear me?” phone scam has been prolific in the United States and UK since early this year.

A call is made to a business or home number and once the person answers the scammer simply asks “can you hear me?” several times, to which most people answer with “yes”.

The scammer then records the “yes” response and ends the call.

The recording is then used to authorise payments or charges in the victim’s name, a difficult task to dispute at a later date.

Sunshine Coast Police said anyone who had received calls of this nature had “serious and legitimate reasons to be concerned”.

“We’re now sharing this post statewide as we believe it to be hitting many areas,” police warn.

Police advice to combat this phone scam :

Spread the word - Share this information

If you receive a “can you hear me?” phone call - hang up - don’t respond!"

Many thanks Radish for the warning.

The "can you hear me?" phone scam has reportedly been prolific in the United States and United Kingdom since early 2017, and weeks ago began causing havoc in Australia.

On Monday, April 24, Mackay police were notified of their first "can you hear me?" call after a scammer rang the home number of a police volunteer.

I heard about this a few weeks ago and alerted hubby and sis in law but thankfully it is now being picked up by the newpapers ....goodness we have to be on our toes don't we...makes me mad...I am sick of all the spam phone calls we have been getting of late.

Goodness me, that is nasty.

I bet they don't like deaf people that say 'pardon'..........

Surely they can trace the criminals that started this.

But thank you RnR.

i am sick to death of the calls that NO ONE is there,     it happens daily,    why would people ring and not answer?    makes no sense,   as once you answer they are charged for the call,   plus its damn annoying when your doing something and go answer to NO ONE,

Cats they are calls to find out when people are home.

I am also sick to death of these scam calls wanting to fix your computer or asking if anyone has had an accident -- and those that ring and hang up -- I have now got my phone being monitored -- I have not heard of the one posted here AS YET -- THANK you Radish very much

I love those ones PlanB. I was a computer co-ordinator/tech consultant at one time.

If totally/extremely bored and in need of some entertainment when they call, I string them along by acting dumb ...  otherwise I just stick the phone in front of the TV and let them listen to that. My best time frame has been 20+ minutes.

My win score is 3.

That is, on three occasions, a frustrated foreign-accented voice has told me, "F*** Off ... you are 'orrible woman."

Sad I know ... but a win's a win in my 'bored out of my brain' book. Even if it only increases the scammer organisation's phone bill.

Yes RnR I have played along sometimes too and also played the dumb head -- but they still wanted me to get on the computer I told them I had never heard of, even told me to go and BUY one and they would ring me back,

Lol r-nr....I do similar sometimes.   Twice now I have had them hang up on ME because I was being sarcastic and stringing "them" along.  They can tell when you are 'wise' to them :) so pointless continuing trying to con you.

Yet amazingly people are still being scammed;  even after all the warnings that have been on tv/radio/newspapers etc.  Some people never learn...

:) That's funny PlanB ... but I also have a tiny modicum of sympathy for those who work in overseas scam centres and probably get a pittance for their efforts. Poor buggers ... probably no other comparitively well-paid employment available wherever they are. Sad world.

It is so darn easy to automatically say YES...but I hope I stop and think before answering if I get one of these calls...have warned hubby but he is likely to forget!

$2.93 a month stops all that. Silent line and Do Not Call register. We get wrong numbers only these days.

Its a nasty world today mainly bcause law and order simply cannot keep up with it since there really is no real deterrent to crime today.

Started with banning the death penalty and softening that led to all other offences getting lesser sentences too

Big Val I pay over $40 per month now for rental ALONE and I used  less than $3 in calls I am not prepared to pay for a silent number and I think you will find it is more like $5 a month extra not $2.93

Val I am also on the do not call register -- does not stop them at all

PlanB have you looked at changing things.

We now have the NBN and pay $69.99 a month and that includes unlimited data for the computer/ipad all our local and interstate calls.  The line rental is include in that.  We are with iiNet.

You can also get cheaper, but that is what we have.

Good deal Radish. Thanks.

RAdish I have been able to get the NBN since last July BUT there have been so many here that have had nothing but trouble -- ie -- the bloke in front of me has ben off line with Land line and comuter3 times for 5 weeks at a time -- and also have had meetings at the local club and the amount of people that have nothing but trouble with this NBN is horrific,  the ones that have been able t get fibre to the home are fine but the fibre to the NODE is a disgrace, yes it is supposed to be cheaper but not if you are having that trouble.

Had  from small teething problem at the start with NB (back in July last year) and we were not getting the speed we expected, but now it seems to have sped up quite a bit.  Maybe because of some of the bad publicity some of the ISP's were getting??

....not that I'm very interested in this "same old same old" Topic which has been "burnt to death" and put up on YLC many many times ..........but - I am with iinet - best Telco provider in the business!

Just my opinion   :-)   ..... I have been with them for 10 years......(other friends have nothing bad to say about them either) ....I have never had a problem with them  ........good huh?    :-)

i am on the do not call register,    i makes no difference,   SANDI,   i was told its to see if you are home,  but WHY,     they dont ring back tio say anything,    no point in it,      as for the calls with COMPUTER BROKEN,    i no longer act like a lady,   and tell them to f, off,     i am sick and tired of them,    it is every day,

Cats, I don't think those overseas will worry about the do not call register.

Also some of the calls and cut offs will be because when these callers ring, they ring several numbers at once and when one answers, it cuts the rest of the calls off.

I had fun with one woman one day when I asked her if she would do the same to her grandmother.  I don't think she appreciated it because she hung up.

Funny I tell them to f off as well or say to them I don't own a computer so you are talking to the wrong person.

Yes I have also told them in no uncertain terms what to do too and hung up after I had 7 of those calls in one afternoon -- and had to run into answer the darn phone too
