Philanthropic Donations

We hear about the rich spending wildly and the poor suffer.

But this Thread is to give credit where credit is due the stories of

the people in history that have been generous in their donations to the

less fortunate.

Bill Gates

Bill Gates is one of these people.

Mining magnate Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest just made the biggest philanthropic donation made by a living person in Australia.

The Fortescue chairman and his wife, Nicola, gave $400 million to a number of different charities at an event alongside prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in Canberra.

Here's where the funds are going:

* $75 million for co-ordinating world cancer institutes

* $50 million for building stronger communities

* $75 million for higher education and break-through research

* $75 million towards giving every child their best chance

* $50 million towards creating equality of opportunity among all Australians

* $75 million towards removing modern slavery

"This is real leadership, this is leading by example," said Turnbull after revealing the donation figure and where it would be donated.

"It isa agame-changer in the philanthropic community and it will change the lives of thousand of people here in Australia and around the world."

So many wealthy Australians do wonderful things but we never hear of them..take for example the much maligned Clive Palmer who gave $100m for medical research and remote WA communities..and..$6m to Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program..and other gifts here and there..

Many people not only give money but their time such as lawyers who work pro bono..psychologists and psychiatrists..but we never hear of them...

That is a very generous donation, but, he forgot to put my name in there, any donation is greatly appreciated. Lets hope these amounts are spent wisely and in years to come we don't  hear about great sums being lost in the process. Remember when the Tsunami hit Indonesia and Australia donated millions only to hear later some people are still waiting to get their houses replaced.

You are not alone Hola...he forgot mine too!!

While the Forrest’s donation is the largest made by living people, in 2014 Australian healthcare and media entrepreneur Paul Ramsay left about $3 billion to his personal foundation when he died.

Paul Ramsay Foundation

“Empowering people, enabling change”

The Foundation has three broad program areas: Health, Education and Disadvantage.
Health
- develop innovative solutions to enhance health outcomes for the community
- address both improvements in systems and technology and equity in health care delivery.
Mental Health
- seek to find new and proven strategies to prevent and treat mental health disorders.
Education
- Early Childhood Education: education of disadvantaged children
- Pathways to Employment: We aim to address lack of career dialogue in school, the lack of entry level positions for school leavers and a detachment from education.
- Teacher Leadership and Development
Disadvantage
- Error 404: Page Not Found

Sounds a bit airy-fairy to me. Hope the practical applications of Paul Ramsay’s huge benevolent bequest lives up to his intent.

Would be nice to see Gina Rinehart give a few bob     -- that'll be the day

Mining magnate Gina Rinehart has been in discussions with her estranged son to give away half of her fortune to charity as part of the settlement conditions of a lengthy legal battle over the family wealth.

Mrs Rinehart, who is estimated to be worth $14 billion, raised her desire to donate a 'significant portion' of her estate as part of the complex legal settlement with her children.

Details of the proposed settlement have not been revealed but Mrs Rinehart and her son John Hancock have both indicated a charitable initiative should be included.

Mrs Rinehart, through her private company Hancock Prospecting and the Georgina Hope Foundation, has donated to many philanthropic ventures with a strong focus on health and helping young people.

She also has backed Australian swimming for almost 30 years. “I started supporting swimming in the early 1990s, in conjunction with the Heart Foundation, to support and promote healthy lifestyles,” Mrs Rinehart said.

“I felt this support was beneficial to help young people. As our company grew, so did our ability to extend this support into Queensland swimming, Western Australian synchronised swimming and then the national Olympic sports of swimming, synchronised swimming, volleyball and rowing.”

Mrs Rinehart agreed last year to extending her partnership with those sports as principal partner and patron. She also attended the Rio Olympics to support the athletes and said she knew many wonderful and inspiring stories about them.

Mrs Rinehart sponsors scholarships to help young athletes get a university degree while competing. She also runs a scholarship program for young girls in Cambodia, which helps poor, high-achieving girls to attend university. Three scholars graduated last year and seven more will graduate soon.

Mrs Rinehart’s company has also contributed to the redevelopment of a wing at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney and to the private Lady Bjelke-Petersen Community Hospital in Kingaroy, Queensland.

Mrs Rinehart has also continued her support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. “Of course, far more needs to be done in this area, and I sincerely hope that corporations can play a much greater role with alleviating not only breast cancers, but all cancers,” she said.

Her company and the Georgina Hope Foundation have sponsored major fundraising events for causes including domestic violence assistance and at-risk youth.

Oh yes she supports ASIA and the Olympics -- what the hell does Olympics do for anyone -- and she is THINKING about other donations, I also think she intends to LEAVE this other money when she dies?   Fair enough it is HER money but she is a mean SOB and maybe she could support the Indigenous people she AND her Father have ripped of over many many decades
