Celebrity chef pleads guilty to assault

MasterChef judge George Calombaris has pleaded guilty to assaulting a teenager after the A-League grand final in Sydney in May.

The Network Ten personality was charged in May with assaulting the 19-year-old man at the grand final between Melbourne Victory and the winners, Sydney FC, at Allianz Stadium.

Calombaris, 38, a keen Melbourne Victory supporter, was caught on camera losing his temper with the Sydney FC fan and pushing him in the chest after the nail-biting game.

In the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, his barrister, Brendan Green, entered a guilty plea on behalf of his client who was not present.

The restaurateur has been under fire this year after an internal audit revealed that he underpaid 162 of the 430 current staff at his restaurants including The Press Club, Gazi and Hellenic Republic, which form part of his Made Establishment Group, over the past six years.

In the video, fans are heard baiting the chef, and one is heard yelling "pay your staff, you dodgy bastard" just before Calombaris heads towards the fence.

What do you think should happen to Calombaris? Should he lose his job on MasterChef for inappropriate behaviour?

I don't like Calombaris and I dislike seeing him on Masterchef or anywhere else.

I'm not fond of the little twerp either. He has pleaded guilty for assaulting the teenager so I hope he has to pay compensation. Also he would be very slack if he never attempted to pay his workers who were underpaid for over 6 years. I'm sure he has a beautiful home and car and also many restaurants, not short of a quid. Throw the book at him.

Wonder if he will be one of the judges in MasterChef Australia 2018 on channel ten 10 next year?

Chefs are not famous for their calm and collected behavior. I must be one of the unusual ones by not once in my life losing my cool in the kitchen.

I once saw a Jamacian Chef D'Partie go after his commis chef with a meat cleaver through a restaurant full of diners. This was a very high class place in the West End of London and the customers were famous people of very high standing.

All  "Jamacian" are good runners and they play good cricket.

Gravey,  Please explain -- ?

People in the public eye are, whether they like it or not, role models and Calombaris should be removed. If allowed to stay on Masterchef the tacit message is that his actions have been condoned. His inability to ignore the truth being thrown at him was not a good look. If you want to be in the public eye and collect the big bucks, you have to wear all that goes with the territory.

Funny how this grown man, hurling epithets at Mr Calombaris on a subject unrelated to the football match (and it was first reported that some of this invective was about Mr Calombaris family which caused him to react) and in a public place suddenly becomes a 'teenager' in the rush to condemn Mr Calombaris for his reaction.

Whilst I agree that Mr Calonbaris should not have put his hands on the stupid 'teenager', he just pushed him in the chest. Mr Calombaris did not punch him out, the man did not fall and no injury was sustained. I think this was a spurious attempt to make a financial gain by this 'teenager' who would probably not have taken legal action had Mr Calombaris not been a 'celebrity'. I have no doubt the guilty plea was to end the court actin as quickily as possible and stop this 'poor teenager' making more of his 15 minutes of fame than necessary.

Calling for Mr Calombaris to be sacked from Masterchef for no reason other than peole don't particularly like him and thier opinion that he must be very wealthy, is absurd.

poor teenager 19 years old, wonder if he still has his nappies on, throwing jealous insults at a person's family,  again we see the comments of the unwashed contributors to these columns, the likes of old man, jealous of not being able to put a decent meal together, gravey, the name says enough, suze you should know better then to get up with that silly comment, thea and hola's comments," we dislike him because of him being on master chef", that by itself states enough of their so called independency of making true comments, I fully agree with KSS summing up as for the other comments, how low can you fall, any wonder this country of ours, AUSTRALIA is going down slowly but surely down the chute!

Ah, go dunk your head in the dunny.

Love George he is ugly, has bad breath but loveees pumpkins

Sack him

Yes I thought ths was the same bloke that was paying low wages????

Well one thing to do -- get him out of the business --

the comments of reagan, pietro and plan b state enough, the jealously exposed by these contributors is dripping from their lips, none of those three would be able to put a decent meal together however they would not, if this chef offered them a free meal, knock it back, nothing more then loud mouths.

OK PlanB

I trained in as a chef in London and clients were not short of a few quid.

Le Coq D'or restaurant ,Stratton Street , Piccadilly,London W1.

The wages were low but experience set me up for life.

Our customers were royalty , film stars and actors.

You expect to pay $A500 for night of French food in UK.
