Drink alcohol and live longer

New research revealed in The 90+ Study has proven that moderate drinking (about two glasses of wine or beer a day) is linked to an 18% drop in a person's risk of early death.

Amazingly, moderately drinking has an even stronger effect on living longer than the life-preserving practice of exercise according to researchers.

This isn't the first study to link alcohol with a long life, but many of these come with caveats as most are detected patterns in a dataset, rather than cause and effect.

So, armed with this information, which bottle of red are you opening tonight?

I've heard the antioxidants in red wine are good for the heart.

a votre sante!

I enjoy a glass of Pinot noir with my dinner :)

"Amazingly, moderately drinking has an even stronger effect on living longer than the life-preserving practice of exercise according to researchers."

Those researchers  should not be spreading that sort of incorrect information.

Do your research

I am following the example of the Queen and Queen Mother....both lived and live in their 90's

" I discovered the Queen Mother’s pattern of drinking rarely varied,” he went on. “At noon, she had her first drink of the day — a potent mix of two parts of the fortified wine Dubonnet to one part of gin. This was followed by red wine with lunch and, very occasionally, a glass of port to end it. Later came the ritual observed at 6pm, deemed the earliest acceptable time for an evening drink. ‘Colin, are we at the magic hour?’ the Queen Mother would invariably ask, and I’d mix her a Martini. After a couple of these, she would sit down to dinner and drink one or two glasses of pink champagne.”

"Her Majesty drinks a gin and Dubonnet with lemon and ice before lunch, a wine with lunch, and a dry martini and glass of champagne at night.

While she might indulge in four cocktails a day, she’s always doing it on a full stomach."

There may be something in it Radish

By taking small drinkts over the day ... one would definitely be stress free which would be good for your health.

Mmm Suze...I might have to start earlier...say lunchtime ;)

If I started at lunch time ...I'd be as drunk as a fowl ..... perhaps the Royals have more stamina ;)

I think it is the Resveratrol in red wine which is beneficial ... providing life extending properties. Resveratrol is available in tablet form.

Also, Australian red wine is very heavy in esters ... not so good.

I am not sure the white wine has any particular benefits (other than the obvious ones).  :-)

Yep I'd be drunk and she probably was too. But when your job is to either wave clockwise or anticlockwise I suppose it doesn't matter. Everyone thought she was so calm and composed but she was really pissed as a tick. Ha ha I think I like her more not less. ;)

My Mum is 95 today and she likes a Gin and Tonic above anything else, often

quoting the Queen Mother. I presented her with 2 bottles of Bombay Sapphire from my last trip abroad. She does insist on Schweppes Tonic water only.

Tib - A very funny comment, I love it. LOL

I drink French wine.....far too much chemical crud in Australian

90% of French wines are contaminated with pesticides.

Nothing wrong with Australian wine.

Yep quite right!

There are far too many studies on the affects of alcohol. I read today that 3½ glasses of wine a week will bring on dementia. So, do we now believe that we will live longer but not know much about it?

Great comment Old Man, could be so very true :-))

I suppose it depends on the size of the glass.............

Ha ha that's great OM that's my kinda glass. I might not be able to remember your name but I'm pretty pleased with the whole situation.

I prefer the studies that say a glass of whisky a day is good for your health, has anyone seen one?

A study or a bottle? :-)))

Jim I haven't seen one but with a little effort I'm sure we can find one. .... If not I'll write one ;)

Tib, if you decide to go ahead I will be happy to be you tester, and I promise to keep testing until we get the right result

We are all going to die so may as well enjoy what time we have left and drink and eat what you like within moderation.

I don't drink a lot but I don't mind a drink. And why not! All the aches and pains go away, the conversation is better, the girls are prettier, if a couple of glasses of good wine is all it takes.... Count me in.

I think that this kind of reporting is irresponsible.  There is no way someone who is very unhealthy is doing to achieve the promise attributed to drinking such a level of wine a day.  Indeed, for those who are morbidly obese with cholesterol through the roof it could well be further detrimental to their health.

I think the report is directed at those who are already healthy.

Cheers Jim and Tib, that's the spirit !
