New Road Rule

The recent kerfuffle about a new road rule about a 4-way stop in Melbourne is easily resolved; Simply, make one street full STOP and the cross street YIELD.

They may just as well then have a 2-way stop ??? Related image Related image

But Victorians do make everything complicated.

For Victoria, I prefer the comma.

We have three of those 4 way stop signs within a kilometre of our house.

The confusion they cause is ridulous. No two people seem able to agree on what the rules are, but at least any accident they happen to cause is minor given everyone has to stop.

I tend to go out of my way to avoid them.

Leonie, my understanding is that a subtle difference lies between a "STOP' sign and a "GIVEWAY" sign. With one a driver needs to actually stop then giveway, while with the other the driver doesnt actually need to stop. Many roundabouts are now having Lights installed because driver discretion is becomming more and more futile.

Perhaps all drivers should be tested using a roundabout before they get their license.

These are all stop signs Adrianus. There are other four way intersections around the same area that have give-way signs, but these particular three intersections have a stop sign on all four corners.

I've been told that one of them used to be a roundabout, but was 'up-graded' to the schmozzle of four stop signs instead.

The "Stop" sign requires a driver to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, that's the first thing to be considered. After stopping, the right of way rule comes into action, so, when two vehicles arrive at a 4-way stop at the same time, and are located side-by-side, the vehicle furthest to the right has the right of way. If three vehicles arrive at the same time, the car furthest left should continue to yield until both of the other cars to the right of them have passed.

I can see it now--4 cars arriving at their STOP signs, AT TTHE SAME TIME ???Who determinesthe first arrival? So, simple, GIVE WAY east /west. STOP north/south.

Mutley, I've never heard such a stupid suggestion.

I'm afraid  my compass doesn't work too well in my car because of all the metal.

Also, are you aware that many (in fact, most) intersections are oriented at angles other than north/south. You really need to get out of the house a bit.

The only simple solution is to remove one pair of Stop Signs, and also remove the public servants and elected representatives who thought it was a good idea in the first place.

And who says Australia is not a third world country  Image result for emoji question

With rules like that even the self driving cars would have a problem

Four way stops are very common in the US.

They are easy - everyone stops, then you give way to the right - giving way to vehicles that are to your right that have reached the intersection and stopped.

That is correct Richied.  Same in South Africa.  It is beyond my comprehension that Australians do not know how to use a 4-way stop.

Further, if traffic-lights are out, that intersection should be treated as a 4-way stop.  I'm just surprised that there aren't more collisions under these conditions.

Hawkeye, I didn't mean those directions literally.I realise streets aren't laid out according to the compass. I simply meant one street STOP and the cross street GIVE WAY. As a matter of fact, this setup works extremely well.

I have a car and a large 4x4 with a bull bar.

When in the car they zoom out of side roads in front of me but never when I'm in the 4x4.

Cowards LOL
