What's the point of the Do Not Call register?

A message from YourLifeChoices member Max:

Something should be done about this:

Like thousands of others, I regularly receive phone calls from telemarketers, particularly those selling solar panels.

As my number is listed with the Do Not Call Register, I have, on numerous occasions, lodged a complaint after calls have been received.   Unfortunately this can be difficult because details of the callers are difficult to obtain, the caller’s number is only visible on my phone until I answer the call.  To overcome this, I have feigned interest which has resulted in a local installer of solar panels calling me.  After I have obtained the name and address of the caller I have made it clear that I am listed on the Do Not Call Register and hold him responsible for the illegal call because he is obviously the employer of the callers.

However, although I have lodged numerous complaints with the Do Not Call Register, nothing appears to have been done and the calls continue. The impression that this organization is a paper tiger is inescapable.

As the spiel that is delivered with these calls it is almost certain that one company is the main offender, but the phone numbers change.  Obviously there should be checks and balances when people apply for phone numbers, similar to those in effect when bank accounts are opened.

I find it impossible to believe that it is not possible to trace these offenders and deal with them effectively.  They often use local phone numbers, surely this would provide an opportunity to track them down if the staff of the Do Not Call Register had even the slightest interest in performing the duties for which, no doubt, they collect a generous salary.

Does the Do Not Call register work for you?

If I do not recognse the number calling, particularly when caller ID is 'Overseas', I do not answer. Anyone who is important to me, or with whom I have a business relationship (ie dentist, doctor, mums nursing home etc) has my mobile number. As for the DNC register, it is a toothless tiger.

I am on "do not call register", but that doesn't stop the Indians running the same con for the last 10 years.

"We are from Telstra and have detected somebody trying to get information from your computer" You need to give us remote access so we can install a safety device"

....HANG UP...NEXT DAY.. "Hello we are from windows and we are wanting to fix your computer"

MAX.   i think we all have been at the end of these calls,  from the SOLAR PANELS,    the TELSTA HERE,   FIX YOUR COMPUTER,        THE TAXATION OFFICE IS GOING TO ARREST YOU,     it is never ending,   what i find more frustrating, is the one who calls and dont answer at all,    whats the point?   they have called,  so done there money,   why hang up,    only reason i can think of,   is its someone who is tele marketing,  and get paid by the number of calls they can prove they have rang,    but they are all annoying,      i am a member of the 'do not call'   but its not working for me either,

I was getting these calls almost every day sometimes more than once -- and I was also on the DNC register --- since I have gone to another supplier -- I can choose to have a private number --or not no extra charge and have not had ONE call,  only trouble is if I ring someone my number will not show and sometimes people will not answer.

What about the one that just says, "Goodbye," and  then disconnects.

Obviously it's some sort of robo call and when someone answers (but all the operators are busy) it still disconnects, but politely. LOL   I've even had the 'Goodbye' message left on the answering machine.  It's a hoot.

Yes quite creepy the 1st time I heard it

I was told that the robot is a way of telling if the number called is a 'live' one.

I don't answer the number if I don't recognise it.  If one does sneak through,  I immediately ask them "how did you get this number?"  if they continue (they usually hang up at this point) I tell them I'm on the DNC register, and ask them to remove me from their data base.  I also say that I will report them if they call me again.  Doesn't always work, and they are now irritating me on my mobile phone.  I have tried reporting them, but not much satisfaction.  However, I'm getting fewer calls these days.  Perhaps they don't like my tone.........

Since I have no landline anymore and only a mobile with Jeenee Mobile @ $9.90 a month unlimited calls and text, I am getting calls as well from unknown numbers. Although annoying to run to the phone, I do not pick up unless the number is known to me and if the call is genuine and they really need me they can reach me by texting.

I get that many calls now I dont pick up unless the number is unknown.

Have you thought about changing your number and let only your closest and dearest know what it is ? Have your name and number removed from Sensis first.

Then get a cheap 2nd phone with a plan from Aldi $15 per year which you give out if you are purchasing something, charity and politicians etc who you do not want to hear from again.

I got one about my car insurance payments being overdue, but I always pay. I told them I'd already paid and would be phoning the Department of Transport, and I asked them for their name; they hung up, ha, ha.

I've now decided to keep my answering machine on all the time - I told my friends to just say their name and for me to call back. So far it has worked.

it is bad enough getting them on the landline,  but now they have tsken over the mobile,   i get calls from everywhere,    and messages,  just left there,     found out this morning,  i am rich beyond my dreams,    my BITCONS have now reached $40,  000,000,      WHAT WIL I DO WITH IT ALL,  LOL,
