Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, dies aged 76

Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, has died aged 76.

Franklin died on Thursday at her home in Detroit surrounded by family and loved ones, her publicist said.

A family statement said "Franklin's official cause of death was due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin's oncologist, Dr Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute.

"In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart," the statement continued.

"We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds."

Franklin was known for her powerful voice and for many hits, including Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools and Think.

So many replays of Aretha's many memorable numbers today ... really enjoyed every one of them ... again.

RIP Aretha Franklin. Voice in a million.

I'm sorry that she's passed on. But (as somebody with a PhD in music) her influence on music overall is overstated: influential in soul music, yes; but not at all influential on the far larger and more venerable genre of 'classical' (art) music.

Knows BS, soul music is not classical music. You know what you can do with your PhD

SAD to hear of her passing,    i am not a fan of soul music,   and have nothing of hers among my collection,   but she was very popular,   and did a lot for music,   R,I,P,    ARETHA FRANKLIN,

I agree.   Who cares what type of music she sang.   The lady had a great voice, one in a million.   And a lady!   When did you ever hear of her running around causing disgrace to anyone.   R.I.P Aretha Franklin - you're in darn good company up there and free of pain.  G d bless

One of the best, RIP Aretha.
